Subbass destroying my kick

Post by brettheaslewood » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:25 pm

on the intro to my latest piece my kick drums tone sounds fairly high, which i don't mind, although as soon as my sub comes in that's it,droned out, and just sounds muddy.
how can i get around this problem?

automated eq?
sub to loud? - if i turn the volume of it down, it just becomes nothing.

here is preview of the tune so you can understand what im talking about

Soundcloud

p.s the majority of this tune is demo still. including that god awfull vocal sample haha
well now, on soundcloud the kicks there and only my sub sounds pretty errewchch

if anyone has any tips on anything i'd be pretty gratefull

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

I used to have the same problem. I work with reason so I used the equalizer and lowered the bass on the sub wobble that was distorting my kicks and raised it by an octave and it sounds great now.

Just turn the sub down and hipass the sub out of you kick.

the answer is very simple, hipass/eq kicks, sidechain the kick and sub. Meaning u could use sidechain compression or just strait volume sidechain, poof magic unmud.

sounds to me that you have some sort of limiter on the master out. lowering the relative level of the whole tune would avoid this (if that's the problem).

As a starting point, have:

Kick, peaking at -10db, low cut at around 80-90 (not too severe of course), small peak around 100. And small means, like, 3db.
Sub, peaking at maybe -13db, high cut around 80-90 and a broad gentle boost at around 50-60hz. Low cut around 20-30hz but you knew that anyway.

Honestly shouldn't be a reason why your kick and sub can't work together without the need for intricate EQing, sidechaining, whatever.

This is just a guide of course, read the mixing thread.

This. It could just be the Soundcloud quality though. Either way, your EQing doesn't sound too out of whack, I'd look into sidechaining the sub off the kick instead.

haha its almost an honor to hear that. well I've only finished 2 dubstep tracks and have about 4 dubstep tracks that are halfway where I ended production. I've only been producing dubstep for a month but I've been producing in general for 6 months. so I won't be rendering any tracks for a while :D

Gotta disagree with ya there. Sidechaing can be a fix, but i wouldnt jump to it unlesss it REALLY needed it. Try Hi passing your kick to around 80hz
