Long, long story - meeting people, hanging out, being in bands, DJing, writing for local magazines, gradually building up contacts & getting known until eventually I could get work writing reviews & features for national press... and from that, I now occasionally get work doing bits of copywriting for record labels too.

But I'm an old fucker, I guess nowadays you'd start by writing a blog as a way of showing the world you've got something to say about music, and build up your profile that way. But before you do that - and I don't mean to sound rude here - you should probably make sure you are confident you know how to spell words like "professional"!

I don't think you can take it as a given that people will skip the tracks - it's a mix CD, why would someone buy that then only listen to the first 20 minutes of each disc??

But you are right - not every casual purchaser is going to hear this and go "OMG this is the sound I've been waiting for, where can I buy DMZ vinyl" etc...most are not going to have that "open ear". But what matters is that SOME will.

I do think that a lot of the story of how people get into music is about luck and chance - sure, you might be an enquiring mind, and seek out great stuff from day one, but I think if you talk to most music lovers there'll be a chance moment - a friend's older brother or sister playing something, or hearing a track in a record shop, something like that - which introduced them to a particular sound that's meant a lot to them. So for me, that means that the more you provide the chance for those chance moments to happen, the better. You can't MAKE people like deep/intense music, but you can at least give them the opportunity to be aware of it...

:wink: :wink: just typing quickly, its only a forum not an essay haha. yeah, i guess getting ready for the long slog up the path of the music industry is all one can do, it seperates the men from the boys at least!

i checked the times for a few of the tracks on there to the ones i have already and the times match as they where full unmixed,

CD is mixed - download version unmixed, but the licensing deals for different tracks were different... You didn't think DMZ would license Spongebob for download for this if they haven't before, did you? :o :?

it's a real shame, those that want tracks like spongebob will prob still get em but not just illegally, when they may have if it was actually available somewhere other then second hand 12" .

I'll give my two cents :

1) The rediculous amount of remixes :
The amount of remixes on this compilation is disturbing. It will get sales figures up, of that I'm sure. This is no representation of dubstep as a genre though. In the end, 5 to 10% of all tracks out there are remixes (including remixes of other dubstep tunes) and on this compilation, we're at around 50% or something. If I was uneducated and looked at this CD, I wouldn't even bother with buying it.
My reaction would be : " Damn this genre is seriously lacking creativity, can't they simply produce their own tunes?". But fortunately, that's just me, as half of the people buying this will probably do so Because of the MOS label.

2) The selection of Tunes
Well can't really argue with that. It's got Coki, Joy Orbison, DMZ, Shackleton, TRG, Skream, Breakage, Burial, Geiom, Jakes, Joker, The Bug, N-Type and Mala. I'd say that's a quality tracklist for such a profit & mainstream oriented project. And altough I loathe some of the other tracks (and I mean LOAV), I honestly, in this particular context, can't blame the personel of this comp for adding them. So, in the end 50% of the tracklist is actually a very good selection which, upon reading the topic title, was a pleasant surprise.

3) The Initiative in itself
This is a commercial project, let's not kid ourselves. We (as a scene) would be lucky enough if 20% of the people who actually buy this would take an interest in the quality tunes of this genre. I really don't mind this project, and it's good to know some quality people with good knowledge were actually involved. I just hope nobody buys this for me for my birthday. I would seriously have to kill that person. Because all of these tunes (with the exception of Changes and Spongebob I think) are available on other Quality compilations or through digital download or vinyl.

In the end, when comparing to the I love Dubstep, Future Sound of Dubstep, or steppaz delight compilations, this pales in comparison. But that's ok. Atleast there's NO FUCKING BORGORE ON IT
