Thoughts on Free Netlabels

Post by kidlogic » Thu Mar 06, 2008 3:07 pm

Im doing a little market research for an idea I have...

Does anyone download tunes from them?

Do you feel that the tunes on them are any less desirable because they are on a free label?

If there was/is a quality one, would/do you check it often?

Discuss.

www.plainaudio.com
www.exegene.com

both sick

exegene is down at the moment, but you can get info from the internet archive - www.archive.org/details/exegene

not dubstep though

I think net labels are really on a valid enterprise if there's no active buyers market for a physical medium. In the case of plainaudio and exegene, if the tunes weren't to come out that way there's every chance they'd never come out at all - there's enough interest to merit several thousand downloads but not enough to merit a vinyl press.

in a market like dubstep where vinyl is selling well (and more or less every release, no matter how good or bad is selling out), I'm not sure there's much point.

so great stuff for the increased availibility of genuinely forward thinking, risk taking music.

I do download a lot of free stuff given away from some netlabels so i must admit i do check it very often, i've listened some dope releases and i don't think they are less desirable, ive been always digging good music and afterall you can find it everywhere, there are some sick netlabels actually.

Here it is a Portuguese one called Enough Records, check their Enough Dubs and you will see why i am recommending, top notch stuff.

Enough

Another Portuguese netlabel called MiMi

Mainly i do visit for some Minimal, IDM, Electronica, Experimental beats, and theres some great netlabels releasing stuff in these genres, brilliant! Here it is some of them...

Xynthetic
Thinner

More to come...
Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

... "less desirable = free label?" uh no.

There's always ways to DIY. That's the freedom of art. Its business that puts value on expression in terms of cash and dividends. There's ALWAYS going to be an alternative. And for that, we should be grateful.
