How do you burn your CD's for use with CDJ's?

Post by krispy » Wed May 05, 2010 7:42 pm

Typically, for no particular reason, I stick to burning 5 songs onto a CD. I think the main reasons why I do this are:

A) I can't write much more information than 5 songs onto one cd
B) I don't like to put too many songs onto one CD because this restricts my ability to use those songs to mix with each other. (If I 10 songs on one CD then I can't play them with each other) So I find by putting fewer songs on the CD it gives me the ability to mix them with each other, if that makes sense.

What sort of practices do other people use for this technique? I don't have a laptop and therefore I don't have Serato unfortunately...

When I first started using my CDJ's I used to only burn one track to one CD, similar to records. This was proven to be extremely inefficient and time consuming.

burn em how they're released

if they're a 2 track release 2 tracks per disc, 8 track ep, 8 tracks on the disc.

I still have the vinyl mentality where i know songs based off the EP/release they're on.

As for dubs I usually just have a CD per artists dubs.

That's exactly what I do.

What I'm wondering, when burning cd's do you equalize the volume of the tracks or do you keep them as they're originally mastered?

I don't equalize, but some tracks have massive volume differences. In the club this can give difficulties when the drop kicks in and the volume is way lower than the tune already playing.. I know you can adjust the volumes with the gain, but offcourse you can forget about volumes of tracks.

If it's overly drastic just pop it in wavelab and give it some love before burning it.

i burn 2 copies of my cd's aswell.

for some gigs i burn an exclusive set of discs and i organize them by style, so one cd is wobble/halfstep, one cd is deeper/housier, one cd is 2tep/garage etc etc

on the cd i only write the name of the first track on the cd, and sometimes i add the name of the event aswell. then i just cut out a little piece of paper and write the tracklist then put it in my cd book with each pair of cds.

think thats about it

usually when i mix recently, i have the gain level, have the deck fader up all the way and then use the crossfader. when i have the beat matched fairly well i turn the gain down and the master fader down a touch, then move over the crossfader and use the gain to mix the volume in properly and then if i need to i bump that deck fader. i almost always mix with the gain and watch the level lights on the mixer

I play on vinyl, but always keep a wallet of tunes handy...just in case. I put 12 tracks a disc, and make compilations. If im mixing on CDs, i generally have no idea what im doing so i wing it very time.

But I always buy printable CDs and print tracklists on each cd, with title up the top "Dubstep WAVs 001..002..003...etc".

I burn in itunes at the slowest speed, i also equalize the volume and burn as many tunes as can hold on a cd, i just write artist names on the cd and tracklisting on a bit of paper that goes in the wallet with the cd. never thought of doubling cds so can mix more tunes together, mght have to just do that :D
