Why does this have to be about money?

Why can't this venture be about the community and a bit of free publicity? You all give out free downloads on soundcloud so why is there such flagrant opposition to a community net label? It's free publicity guys. For those of you who are new to the scene this would be a fantastic opportunity to get your stuff out there.

If any of you keep track of your soundcloud downloads you'll know when a track gets downloaded once that's it in the system, it gets passed on to two more people then those two people pass it on to two more. Giving out freebies via the web is a great way to get your stuff out there and your name known.

As well as that it's a great way to get to know the other guys on here and make new contacts and find new opportunities for collabs and inspiration for tracks.

Wouldn't it be better to concentrate efforts into trying to help this project get off the ground?

Try and concentrate on the real issues behind this project guys. Keep it relevant yea?

This is a great opportunity. Let's not ruin it by pushing for more and biting the hand that feeds.

this was my expectation, that it would be free, community driven and strictly for promoting ourselves and our crew of very talented musicians. fuck, i give all my tunes away at this point anyway. the record industry is a fucked up place to be trying to make money right now unless youre getting publishing, touring, merchandizing etc. there aint to fucking money in record sales....

this is a promo thing, not a lets get $$ thing.

Dubway will have no part of anything like this if it involves us paying for something, or us getting paid for something.... but the system I mentioned above is the only way this is going to be feasible. No money involved

Great idea, to many people want to have it their way, and there already is a thriving netlabel scene, It just seems DSF members are not hip to the whole scene.

Basic A, if i were you, i would just start my own netlabel and recruit here if thats the noise you want.

I just want to make something for us to do around here man, and money is not part of that. I try n start these little projects and support em when other people do... I do the sessions, they had weekly brainstorms/projects going for a while, me n dep n grooki are trying to do the mass forum collab idea but its not goin well... I try n come up with stuff like this, thatll benefit us in learning to produce, and in promoting the fact there is good music here... It goes this way... sorry If I get flared about it but the way I see it, like kaiori said, if they want a REAL label, they need to send demo's to real labels like savory, ect. or they need to start one themselves. This is just that constant desire of some people on here to pick arguements when there are none on here.

I dont wanna start my own netlabel man, Im working on starting a REAL label, with dubplates and digital distro and ect. Thats my own project. This was just something small I thought we could do as a community. I still think we can. but people cant call me an asshole if I try to be realistic. I have a few members willing to help alot now (thanks deadly habit, upstateface, kaiori, symetrical)... But people cant expect more out of this then is feasible and LEGAL, and cant tell me to start a poll when I try n say its not.

If you want a paid label, go start one, go send demos.

If you want a simple, free, community project to participate in, for a bit of creative stimulation and simple promtion as your reward, PM me, and stay tuned for details.

I'm with Baisc on this one. There are plenty of successful free netlabels in IDM/Expiremntal (Cock Rock Disco, Acroplane, and Net-lab to name a few); why shouldn't there be one for dubstep?

Main problem I see with people calling for vinyl releases anyway - what makes them think the standards for this label would be lower than elsewhere? If they're not getting releases already there's no point setting up a vinyl label to sell poop.



Basic A - perhaps if you started a new thread with an explicit outline of the IDMf netlabel model, so people could see how you envision this working. Just a thought

Haha dude its not about how invision it its about how it is.

Its a free netlabel with themed releases that eveyone submits for n the best get voted in.

Itll all be in the about page, and arguements will stop.

First theme gonna start taking submissions tonight after few more details.

General community, got me, deadly, kaoiri, jfk, gnome, and symetrical all willing to pitch in and help when needed, wiring up a system for the hole thing now...

Essentially:

1: a Wordpress homepage : this is where we plan to organize the packs for download (thanks habit for volunteering to help take the weight off hosting them) as well as make official statements and whatnot...

2. themed releases (the first is decided, Ill be posting later after get the last little things sorted), focusing on setting small regulations which will push peopls creativity in a situation.

3. voting on each will happen after all submissions are collected and we upload them to a playlist, at this time 2 polls happen, one here on the boards, one on wordpress, the two reults are tallied together, the tracks with 10 hgihest votes make pack.

4. Everything gets bundled with a bit of artwork ect. and put up for d/l...

5. promotion will be pretty big just off the community nature of it, but on aside from that, well push hard with banners ect. (the ONLY money involved in this will be purchasing a banner spot from dubway, to boost traffic.) ... I also plan to get som DJs from the community to do promotional mixes, ect.

If people dont like it they dont have to participate.

Money wont be involved, its just something fun, will promote itself but with a whole forum of aggressively promoting artist pitching in, itll b no time before its verywhere you turn.

One a month give or take. I am working on a soundcloud, cant maintain a myspace yet but we'll se if I can get someone whos helping out on it.
