Throughout most conscious life I've been a complete metalhead, until I encountered some electronica a couple of years back - it started with spacecruises listening to Ratatat, progressed from this to that to glitch beat/experimental artists like Hecq (amazing, btw) and The Flashbulb (at which point I've lost all common musical interests with all of my friends) and now I am completely addicted to dubstep. The thing is though, every genre that I've passed through so to speak was fleeting, I knew I enjoyed it but I also knew that I would eventually move on and like something else. Something about dubstep thoug, it's just mind-boggling. Maybe it's because it's electronica's variation on death metal (metaphorically speaking) - it's gritty and ridiculous and not afraid to experiment but at the same time accessible and is completely irresistible as far as nodding your head goes.
I've been listening to it long enough that I find it very odd that I'm not moving onto something else. Something about how visceral it sounds is almost... transcendental. Not only that but I find it amazing how many little-known (at least here in the US) artists participate in it. In case anybody gives a shit (which is unlikely) here are some of my favorite tracks that I've found thus far: Truth - Revelation, 16 Bit - Chainsaw Calligraphy, Skism - The Blank (16 Bit Remix), Damien Marley - It Was Written (chasing shadows remix) and Mblack - Heartbreak (bare noize remix) (Yeah I know the vocal intro is lame but the drop is really awesome
Anyway, lurking on this forum a little bit and hearing some of the members' mixes was the final straw. I want to make my own shit. I'm not retarded musically (9 years of informal piano) but I feel humbled at the prospect. The thing is though, living in the cultural shithole in the US, I don't know anything about it.
So, some questions to the veterans and otherwise here that make dubstep - what do you feel dubstep is? what artists have inspired you? what software/hardware do you use to make music? where to learn the basics? how did you learn the basics? any advice for a beginner?
