Reclaim bank charges

Well... it works! I got £400 off Lloyds today. All it took is two strongly worded letters. Nice.

Hey paulie, well in man, i got £626 back of royal bank of scotland today.

People on there are so helpfull. Im actually surprised at the result, im taking on the halifax for a much bigger sum, having banked with them for over ten years its going to be quite a lot what with the ammount of times i dont get paid on time, and i was getting prepared for a lot of hassle/ paperwork.Most folk on the forum said just do one at a time, but royal bank were threatening to default me so i got them in my sights too, was preparing for much more of a battle from them to be honest!

Any way big up the little man fighting back and all that!

Any one else doing this? If theres enough folks maybe it could become a sticky, to chart everyones progress!

depends on the law i suppose. here they kinda have to justify charging you what they do, and as theres never any manual intervention when they apply charges, £38 quid a whip is a bit too much to take in the eyes of the law

Did you get all your old bank statements?

Cause Barclays owe me 1000s (bein a dappy student for 4 years and not realising they were rising me for almost £100 in charges every month) and are trying to charge me something like £10 a month per statement.

Just wonderin cause I've heard a lot of people say they just guessed how much is owed to them rather than going through the hassle of getting old statements.

Cause Barclays owe me 1000s (bein a dappy student for 4 years and not realising they were rising me for almost £100 in charges every month) and are trying to charge me something like £10 a month per statement.

Just wonderin cause I've heard a lot of people say they just guessed how much is owed to them rather than going through the hassle of getting old statements.

my two current accounts were a fiver for statements. my credit card say they want £90 for fewer months' statements than either of my current accounts. fucking gypos

I may be wrong, but i was under the impression that your bank is subject to the Data Protection Act like any other organisation - you have a right to a copy of all information they hold on you (including statement), for a maximum £10 administration fee.

Tis true, send your letter off with a cheque for £10 and thats all you'll need to pay for.

As ThinKing and LEQ said, you can request the info under the DPA. The charge for this to you a maximum of £10, but normally costs the company £300 to £400. As such if they are refusing to give you statements for free, ask to speak to a manager and use the DPA info request as a last resort. Hopefully they'll back down and give you what you wanted in the first place!!! A letter to a high-up manager can often help too.

By the way, if you send the letter to the bank and they reply offering half the money, send them another letter telling them where to shove it (in more polite language would prob be better ) and they should cave in and give you the loot!!!
