Yeh the thing is though bruv is I'm not a spliff smoking/red stripe drinking rasta coming straight out of Jamaica with a Sound system on the back of a van. I don't make Dub at all, I barely make 'Dubstep' in that sense. That scene/look is pretty irrelevant to me and me culture, but I have studied it hard regardless.
Correct, all of the real money
now is made at festivals/shows. This is because of the drop in record sales, which used to be the fundamental source of income for artists, back when vinyl used to sell enough for it to be a sustainable income.
Computer geek with an attitude or not, I have the knowledge, focus and dedication (and am still gaining knowledge and feeding from the knowledge at hand) to be successful. Don't pass me off as an amateur just because I don't DJ, I've spent a lot of time learning about music and the creation and evolution of it, I haven't had time to learn how to DJ and am working on it now. That's not to say that I don't know how a vinyl sounds, or how sub bass from a Dub record coming from a huge sound system feels, believe me I do. Don't assume you know peoples status or level just because they lack one skill, playing music (or mixing) and making music are two completely different things and there's plenty of ways to be successful in either without the other.
