many people have a sub with their monitor setup?
Was just about to buy a samson one to go with my samson rubicons but I read that they aren't worth getting unless your room is properly treated. Just been switching to my hifi 2.1 speakers when I want to hear the low end of the bass when doing mixdowns.
Do any of you proper subs with your monitors? and did you have to do loads of faffing about to get a flat and proper sound?
cheers

Re: many people have a sub with their monitor setup?
i have samson r8a's as my monitors and the samson r10s as the sub,
the speakers are good to get most bass down to 60hz - 50hz, but it tends to lose the force after that which is why i bought the samson sub,
its a good sub because:
the sub has input and output connections, so when the outputs are to your speakers it has its own high pass filter
it has a remote that controls your whole system and also has a sub off button,
a dim ability and sub volume buttons,
my room is mildy treated,
it u can still hear it all and its good for songs and mixdowns, but in saying that i always have a sub in my car and that destroys the one in my room, u can relly feel it in the car but not so much in the room. so in short its a good sub but decide if u really need it, or just buy a cheap one so it doesnt matter if it doesnt work that well.

Just dont buy anything to big for your room.
Biggest advice you need right there.
I had a 10 in here, had to sell it and get an 8 and a few little 6 inch-add-em-to-your-boxes cones...
Dont overdo it. Hearing it and overexaggerating it are two different things.

Personally - I would think mixing with a sub would only work in situations where one is ONLY doing theatre design (which uses a sub) or 100% club music for clubs that have subs, etc....
for normal monitoring, subs can get in the way...

You can't just turn it down? I was thinking about getting a 10" or 12" for my set up. I don't need that much for my production set up but when I dj I use 2 sets of 8" monitors. I want to be able to blast when no one is aroundBasic A wrote:Just dont buy anything to big for your room.

A sub would only distract me from making music.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

My room is way too small, sub would only make it worse
Re: many people have a sub with their monitor setup?
I have a pair of krk rp-5's...
I used to use an 18" yorkville elite to hear subs while doing the mix... my subs were consistently to low but it helped me reduce muddyness in low-ends... I know the 18" are completely overkill considering my """"studio"""" happens to be my kitchen but it's all I have and it did help... obviously I'd only use them when working on the mix for the subs and ALWAYS a/b the tune I' mixing with a professionally mixed/masterd tune to see how my levels compare considering the system I'm on....

Re: many people have a sub with their monitor setup?
my room is small too.... but it seems to be more of a problem to me because my speakers get no bass.... i've got little 30w M-Audio crappy things... NEVER buy those btw, they suck!
I'm trying to figure out what monitors to get, and I would like a sub just to be able to monitor what is going on down below 70hz... I'm tired of putting my music on another system or in my car and it being a total overkill on bass when on my monitors it seems to sound just great!
Any recommendations for a monitor setup, preferable with a subwoofer??? I've got a kind of low budget, under $600.... i see it to be possibly very useful to make sure my subs arent too much... I just want something that can cover the lowend of my music, it's all over the place

You get what you pay for boss. You want good speakers then you gotta save up some cheddar. No way around it. The best way to keep your sub in check is to put a freq analyzer on your master and keep an eye on things. If your sub is the loudest thing in your mix then duh you have too much! I would really recommend taking that 600 bucks and get the best tops you can get. You can always add a sub later if you still think you need it. I paid about 600 for my Yamaha hs80m and I love em to pieces. It might be hard to find that price but I did so it can be done.Isturite wrote:my room is small too.... but it seems to be more of a problem to me because my speakers get no bass.... i've got little 30w M-Audio crappy things...
