Southampton Dubstep

Post by dj seizure » Wed May 05, 2010 5:05 pm

I am going to Southampton for a little University madness.

I've got a decent establishment for myself locally with my residency at 2 clubs and a radio weekly.

But I have no idea what so ever about how to get sets/who to talk to about getting sets!

I know with Bristol, Hijackbristol.com is pretty sick to talk to promoters and check for the upcoming events. Is there anything similiar for Southampton?

I know of the clubs like Oceana, Junk, Kinki, Jesters, 90 degrees, Bliss, So bar, The Cube... etc etc..

But who do I get into contact about getting ickle sets or some form of residency!?

And if there is anyone on here that knows about shizzle then I just made a Soundcloud (I know I've been slow to get one), so check out my demo mix on there..

only southampton producer i know lives in london now

i got the impression that the general scene of the area has the potential to be there but just isn't. there's promoters like ejector seat doing more of a live band thing and... that's it from what i've seen :I

Ahh shit, well my 5 years spent there won't be too fun.

I know all the clubs and SU names, but just not the promoters or who to contact like companies that put shit on!

There's not much of a scene at all.....we get some big names down every now and again i.e caspa, rusko, skream, benga, nero, joker etc...I was so excited when loefah and sgt pokes cames down...but the turn out was poor...i happily bounced away regardless. Most of the places (orange rooms, buddah...etc) want a mix of music...mainly electro house, chart tunes bit of dubstep and dnb...but theyre not too keen on just a dubstep set or night unless they are getting in a big name. And unfortunately i have'nt met too many people that really appreciate the music, its just a perk of going out and getting fucked!! You going to S'hampton Uni, or solent uni??

Theres not alot going on atm mate, bit of a bummer really, the last thing i was at was Loefah at Junk, dubkings and them lot did this one, I think he's called Dubfama on DSF, could be wrong tho...

The Rhino is closed atm, Wax were putting on some good nights, hopefully they will still be about when it re-opens.

other than that, join Junks newsletter, they have been bringing good acts in lately, joker ect...

If you know of anything, send us a PM man. :t:

Going to Southampton Uni.

Yeah I was there for the Loefah event. Deadout. Really upset to see that too.

I'm just looking for a residency at one of the clubs to do maybe an hour a week? That'll have a little break in to the Southampton scene.

The SU's I have sorted now due to the luck of knowing most the JCR's and event organisers. It's just the clubs though.. Hmmmm

I'll get in contact with this Dubfama thing, and I assure you, if I get myself a residency or even have the balls to just start up my own night, then you should alllll come down! :)

Nice one, I'm at solent uni so if you manage to get anything then give me a pm. Im trying to start a dubstep group at uni, so people can meet, swap tunes mixes etc... nd if that starts up well then hopefully the uni might help with getting slots in some of the clubs..fingers crossed :)

I think this is the key thing, getting a dubstep community of producers and djs to all support it, once we got that, then we need to talk to clubs to try and get a residency and for them to allow us bring people in.

I know with the SU's and bars around Glen eyre and surrounding I'll have that on locks. It's just getting the wider audience to get to a dub event instead of Oceana!

And Jjones, if you're up for doing a night, bring us all in on slots. Seeing as there are people in Soton and the Uni, then we can already capture a wider audience.

Shall I create a southampton dubstep page?

Yeah thinks thats a really good idea. I cant stand oceana. I understand why people want to go there it scares me quite a bit. Just so bright and its less about the music and more about the lady next to you. Not my kind of club. I think we could get a really good night going in southampton. Lets do it!

Get on it and this is the most important part. getting your friends to invite people and your friends friends.

Who cares where they are from, we need as much support as possible. So get on the FB group and get inviting!

I don't know if you lot know this but the easy way to invite people to the group is.

1) Go on the group and hit up "invite people to join"

2) Then the screen pops up, ignore it and copy and paste:

javascript:elms=document.getElementById('friends').getElementsByTagName('li');for(var fid in elms){if(typeof elms[fid] === 'object'){fs.click(elms[fid]);}}

into your URL and hit enter. Wait a few moments dependant on how slow your comp is, but eventually every single brother and mother on your Facebook will be highlighted.

3) Hit send invitations

4) Dance.

BOOOM

safe.......

basically there is stuff going on, but its a bit loose...... promoters tend to be pretty waste and events consistent of only single headliner events with the typical big names etc, i used to run a night which was reasonably successful, but once again - its a student city and no one brings in big rigs often...... there are regular events, its just that they are not very good

few decent producers about that come through uni and what not, not all 'dubstep' exactly but ive got a couple of vinyl releases about to come out, a mate of mine who goes by the name 'tropics' has an album forthcoming on planet mu, there is 'eleven8' who just had his first vinyl release who is another good mate and last but not least, 'Royal T' who is a well known grime producer who i do mastering for and have simple known him since i was younger, errrrmmm basically message me if you want more info - im from the city originally and start uni here aswell in september..... im based here but do all music related stuff in bristol.

Sick, well please for now get on the facebook group and get inviting.

I completely get the whole One big name thing, that's what I noticed about most the events in Southampton.

Once we get enough people interested on the group then I think I'll stick my head out and go for the first night, get as many local producers/djs involved. Might not go so well with a not so big name, but still it's best to get the unknown through and this would be a good platform.

But that's all for the future, for now, get promoting for the group! It's looking pathetic at the moment!!

lol mate, seriously.... a random facebook group for people who like dubstep in the local area isn't going to change anything, ofcourse there are a few, dare i say it, 'heads' around but ive grown up here and its defiantly a student crowd who love there LFO abuse...... good luck is all i can say, sincearly.

The facebook group would hopefully intend to gain so much interest that we should be able to have people who would like to see a regular Dubstep/dnb night going, or even several.

It'll also help with viral promotion later on once events have been organised.

At the moment there is next to nothing going, so there is no harm in trying is there?

I think will the help of JJ and Inspekkkta, we can get a few hundred in the group, then once uni starts, I can start talking to clubs. We'll have to see how it goes really because at the moment Southampton is dead.

Southampton scene is shit really everyone knows the students want cheap beer and songs the girls can sing along to so they all cater to that. Junk and Rhino have their moments but the glo-stick crowd fuck up most vibes. Soul Cellar will give anyone a gig mid week but no one will come. Once there was Nexus where the drug crowd went but now the best place for good music is house parties. clubs are not cutting it here.

I started this thread a long time ago but everything has worked out real well.

This week I'm doing Glen Bar, Chambers, Junk, Sobar, Bliss, Cube and a couple of others, but I'm still getting used to the names/mixing them all up.

Yeah there is no scene whatsoever, so I have to keep my hour sets pretty damn commercial but oh well, at least it's going good!
