earth tremor wrote:Hey all, I'm trying some stuff out. With this track I'm trying to get some kind of fusion between 2-step and Industrial. I always like to challenge myself to making "odd" beats. This one isn't for everybody, I suspect.

I'm not altogether that far, and I feel like I need some help with it. What kind of lead should I go for? It needs more variation definitely, for now it's just looping so you can feel the groove.

Any comments/criticisms are appreciated. :)

Cheers!

I can see where you are going with this. It's got potential. A couple things I think you could do.

The drum patterns are a bit on the boring side. Switch it up more. You can keep the 2-step feel but toss in some extra kicks here and there. I usually setup my beats in 1 bar loops. I then make about 6-8 different patterns. Most of them will just add an extra kick or 2 or take one away. Others will change up the kick and the snare or the hats. They don't have be complex or anything, just something to add just a little variation to that part of the song.

It would definitely help to get some sort of melody or pad or something going. Even if it isn't a complicated melody. Just something to give the listener another sound to grasp on to. Even if it's only 3 or 4 notes, it can make a big difference. For this particular style I would definitely try to build a melody using a more analogue type sound. Something that has a bit of roughness to it but still makes a good melody.

Other than that it's a nice idea. I love to hear people mix up genres like this. It can make for some really good stuff.

hi guys, I've been producing for about 4 months now and this is my first attempt at making dubstep. It's by no means perfect but I would appreciate your comments on how I can make it sound better and more listenable to dubstep heads. Cheers

@ariosa - 1st one sounds good. maybe a bit more bass, feels like it wants some.

not dubstep again, but i value everyones opinion, and not sure what i want to do with it or leave it....

@samkablaam - i'm really liking that tune mate - nice to listen to a tune that ain't dubstep every once in a while to give your ears a break - but yeah manly positive things to say on that track, it's really epic and soundscapey and is progressive, but at the same time retaining my attention - loving that finger plucked bass type sound you got carrying the beat in the breakdowns - nice one bro - cheers for the feedback yesterday aswell bro - check out the latest version of the track in my sig?? my laptop power-cable has broke now so i've gotta wait a couple days till I can finish it =( i've got so many ideas!!

haha - i'm glad you mentioned that dude - I been using the same patch for sub throughout the track and for the intro I set it to fade slowly after each hit cause I wante dit boomin' in with the kick - forgot to automate it to go back to normal after that!! I'm just monitoring on a pair of shitty headphones I nicked from music class at school and a crappy pair of logitech speakers with a blown woofer - too skint to get the good gear!!

@Shear - Dude i know you're new and we're all (mostly) happy to help - but check the rules bro, ya gotta give to take, Sharmanji declares at least two feedback comments before you post a track!! you scratch our back we scratch yours ya dig?

@ Grayscale -- huge sound man, feeling it! i think if you bring the frequency down on the bassline a little it will phatten up a lot, it might also help to simplify the rhythm in a few places..

post some feedback about someone elses track first. there isnt a person sitting on the other end of the internet with his fingers crossed that he can feedback your track. its a two way street.

the post above yours explained this.

@samkablam - Cold air - great atmospheric vibe, I think if you want to build on it, a thing to consider might be adding more layers to the bass drum and snares, like a bunch of snares hitting at the same time.. maybe a little delay on one.
also thinking some deep, long sub bass tones in there especially when the drums fallout will make it fill the room

@Grayscale - man - how do you get them levels? AT 1:32 or so bring that bass up more or wobble some low freqs, you got it locked!can i ask what you use for production? Are you mastering the tracks or are they raw output? i can't ever seem to get levels high enough without getting nasty..

@ Moodizzle - at 1:56 i dig the lead coming in, but it takes forever to get to that. maybe shorten the phrases in the beginning, bring that in, chill it down, then bring it back all crazy.. also add more movement and variation in the wobbles

really appreciate the feedback!

word, cheers. here's the soundcloud, since its a remix i renamed the track appropriately. Please let me know if its an issue - the only sample used was the violin- all else was made with Live, my MPC 2000xl, and then chopped up in Acid.

they're raw output bro - it's all in the mix!! nah I just make sure (or try to make sure) that it's all sorta working together - don't think there's a track on there thats hitting over -6db solo'ed so then i'll just rock up master fader without worrying about peaking - was definately think of putting some bigger bass under those - that was my task until my laptop powerlead decided not to work anymore!! am just gonna make some dinner then i'll give those soundcloud tracks a listen - let you know what I think bro.

@ Phear - the remix sounds shit loads better on soundcloud things are much clearer and don't sound downsampled like on the last track!! - the second one i'm not feeling as much - although I really dig some of the basslines are cool and defo a bit different (unlike mine, lol) just not too sure about the synths, sound a bit x-filesey, unless that's the feel your going for a recon try for something a bit more gritty (again, that's just my taste) and also try more punchy snare samples, way too much high end on the snares!! keep it up though bro.

@ Drekbek - nice, wouldn't be an arsehole about this one, really nice percussion, i like those little metallic thwaks that throw the beat about a bit. Not crazy about the sounds you got on that hihat, maybe use something a bit more fluid, get them a bit more shuffley, but that's just my opinion. It's actually pretty good, I'd listen to it easy man.

@ Phear - dunno about the first one, second one was good, the bass sounded alright but maybe a little generic, maybe try something a little different.. the synth with the bass works really well, but i think the beat needs a bit of work.

soundcloud ting just coming up

Soundcloud
^^ this one been doing today, quite ambient, kinda weridly epic-sounding dunno why. not finished structurally or mixwise or really at all

Soundcloud
^^ this one i've been doing for the last few days, don't usually do much wobble stuff but quite liked the sound i got from this... ignoorrreee the second drop, i was thinking of putting a more 2steppy beat to the second drop but it flopped on this attempt and i forgot to cut off the rough workings from the mixdown
