true

but Jim Jarmusch makes films like Ghost Dog and permanent vacation, not painfully-generic, craptastic wobblefest dubstep that'll have a gnatfly's attention for 4.3 nanoseconds.

If yr gonna steal, at least make something the world hasn't had yet. DJ Shadow rather than eurotrance covers of 80s songs, etc.

Here's a thought: If you're gonna steal, don't announce it here. :t:

Yeah i know :)

Actually, I totally agree with Jarmusch's decree. BUT, let's not try to take and apply to the world of music something which has dubious parallel with what we do as producers.

In film, unless you're literally copying clips of another film, or copying the script of another film, it's virtually impossible to "copy" or "steal" in the same way that is frequently debated here about vocals, etc. Of course, you can copy a soundtrack, but that's obvious.

I think Jarmusch's definition of "steal" is more like "take your inspiration from". Film as a medium is virtually completely open-ended in terms of allowing you to steal an idea from another medium and interpret it. Don't think he's literally promoting copying a clip from one film and putting them into another (Have a feeling that he would totally look down on that as not being creative). Anyway, I know from the films I've made that filmmakers are lauded when they make grandiose statements about where I got the idea for this scene, etc...

Tarantino was accused of blatant mimicry of previous ideas, but it's just not the same thing as being accused of lifting a portion of a song or a vocal and sticking it into your music. Whether philosophically there should be this double-standard, that's another debate (I definitely support sampling!)

i've been thinking about this lately... i gotta say i kinda agree. it doesn't bug me to sample (as long as not in excess) because i'm doing something creative with it.. no one could give a good artist shit for 'stealing' clips of audio because, hey, at least they're making music for people to bump. if we didn't make it, it wouldn't get made, period.

I don't think there's a Brutal Electro scene patch for films either.

in which case i'd like to further it and say if you're not making something truly unusual and new, you're not stealing from enough sources

hence the famous example of drum and bass just becoming musically inbred from the producers just listening to dnb and dnb alone

It's difficult to make good electronic music when you have no money.
