Berlin
So I'm having the pleasure of a few nights in Berlin in July and I was wondering if there were any reccommendations for decent clubs out there? Or if anyone knows of any decent gigs or events taking place between the 12th and 15th of July then hook me up!
Cheers!
Cheers!

I went to an Aberdeen vs Hertha Berlin football game in Berlin and spent most of my time in that Irish bar sadly. I also would have drowned when i fell asleep in the fountain outside the Europa center if it wasn't for the sharp witted local constabulary.

Climb to the top of Teufelsberg. It's pretty close to the Olympicstadion so you can do both in one day.

Re: Berlin
Wow, club-wise, with the exception of Berghain I'd personally stay away from all those...
Watergate is kinda posh and boring to be honest; the music tends to be pretty standard clubby deep house and the crowd are a bit too dressed up. It's quite, well, 'clean', though - if that's the kinda night you want. Has a really nice view of the river. Tresor is full of lechy tourists; I don't actually know any Berliners who go there at all, although occasionally the lineups can be interesting if you're into techno.
I've had great nights in:
Berghain
Horst - on certain nights (Version, Wax Treatment, Verstehen Sie Bass, etc) when they bring in extra sound and make a proper party of it. Otherwise it's a bit lacklustre
HBC (good for house and disco, soundsystem's a bit pants though)
Maria (some great bookings but a bit too big for its own good)
Rechenzentrum (probably my favourite, though I believe this is now closed)
Bar 25 if you're in a lighthearted mood and the weather's nice. Music's not so great though
Arena
There's also a bunch that get a lot of attention which I haven't been to in the year or so I've been here - Weekend (much like Watergate but posher), Ritter Butzke (much the same), Icon, Tape, Golden Gate, etc etc...
As with any venues, the crowd and the music depend massively on the night. Berghain on a Saturday night or Panorama on a Sunday afternoon are probably the most consistent in this respect (solid techno and solid house respectively), although it's not what it used to be (and some people have trouble getting in, as has been well documented
).
Check RA a couple of weeks before; the club listings are pretty comprehensive. Restrealitaet.de has more info on stuff like open air parties that aren't so widely publicized, but you have to be a member (which I'm not). Generally I find the most interesting bookings are in proper clubs anyway.
Would love to check out Teufelsberg; have been meaning to for ages but never made it down.

Re: Berlin
i pretty much agree to everything you said. unfortunately i think monday to thursday is not the best time span to hit the clubs. even in a city like berlin with literally hundreds of clubs bigger events will take place at the weekends. if you're interested in getting wasted in a underground club with random ass music you won't have problems doing that.static_cast wrote:Wow, club-wise, with the exception of Berghain I'd personally stay away from all those...Watergate is kinda posh and boring to be honest; the music tends to be pretty standard clubby deep house and the crowd are a bit too dressed up. Re: Berlin
Any tips on avoiding that? I'm visiting Berlin this summer and I'd hate to fly half-way around the world only to not be let in. What's it take, dress shoes instead of trainers? A weird haircut? A suit jacket? A hot girl on my arm, what?static_cast wrote: As with any venues, the crowd and the music depend massively on the night. Re: Berlin
Oh god. It's been beaten to death on pretty much every music forum on the internet. Touch wood, I've never had a problem, but I know a lot of people who have, including a handful for seemingly no reason at all. Just have a backup plan, and don't care too much about getting in (it's a great club as "big clubs" go, but the kind of ridiculous hedonism and excess for which it used to be known is something that I haven't seen there in a very long time).twentyOneDummies wrote:Any tips on avoiding that? But some tips anyway:
- It's totally NOT about dress shoes; it's an industrial techno club. Crowd is mixed - anything from young trendy kids to gay techno vikings wearing nothing but crotchless leather hotpants. (Actually you don't really see much of the latter anymore - see above - 'used to be known'.) You don't get girls wearing too much makeup and stupid heels; equally you don't really get much of the kinda gimpy socially inept end of the student crowd either. But the quickest and most efficient way to get turned away is to rock up in leather shoes and some godawful smart shirt and bootcut jeans like you're going to some expensive bar in Mitte.
- Don't go in groups bigger than 3. I've seen loads of people get in in big groups, but you also see more big groups getting turned away than pairs or individuals, so if you wanna be safer...
- Don't be an obnoxious tourist tnuc. If you wanna play it really safe, don't speak english in the queue, although that's prolly a bit OTT. I'm sure the bouncers aren't racist, but if they've never seen you before and they don't like the look of you, it makes sense that to them, the likelihood of you being an obnoxious tourist tnuc would be higher if you were talking loudly in english than if you weren't saying anything.
- .................meh. I always feel a bit silly dishing out advice like this. Just follow some obvious common-sense type advice and apart from that, there's not really much you can do. Oh, and 1-5am is prime queueing time, up to an hour on a busy night. But it runs from midnight friday til early afternoon saturday, and then again from midnight saturday until late sunday night or monday morning, so there's plenty of time.

Lots of people think Sunday afternoon is the best time to go to Panorama; I'd be inclined to agree.

Re: Berlin
Cheers mate, sounds all good to me. I'm pretty softspoken and tend to avoid the tourist stereotype in Europe (well, except maybe when I'm in Amsterdam...I'm probably your typical touristy asshole in that city
) plus I'd be going with a German girl so hopefully my English wouldn't be too much of an issue. Glad to know I won't have to lug around any fancy ass clothes.
Never really checked it out on the internet too much because I'm not into techno like that but I'm a firm believer of experiencing music in its optimal environment so if anything can make me fan, it's hearing it in the right Berlin club I'm sure.

I had a very...interesting...experience when I climbed it.
Went in January in the freezing cold, didn't have a map or directions and didn't realise just how icy it would be. Got to the top and it got dark pretty damn quickly. Going down it was one of the most scariest things I've done, slipping all over down this steep, forested hillside and falling loads in the dark.
Don't be an idiot: go in the summer and in the day time.
