I then realized I do not know how to play a trumpet or a violin. I found it easier to find some decent samples of people who can.
Really, you just need one solid trumpet note and Battery 3. You can make a full on orchestra with Battery 3, as with kontakt. but kontakt is more tedious
Im just starting to dive into battery 3 myself, I already like it though. Is kontakt much different/worth learning?
in terms of making sample instruments and then saving them as a full instrument, then yea Kontakt is better. It has a midi map for placing the sample clips onto specific notes. But really its personal preference. imo its best to learn both because battery can do things Kontakt cant and vise versa.
apart from the drum articulations, i can do everything in Kontakt that i can do in battery. Battery imo, is just a re-skinned kontakt thats friendly to drums
edit: actually with kontakt 4, it can do wayyy much more than battery. I still use battery though!

I'll definitely have to try this one out. I really don't get much use out of piano VSTs but when I do use them I want the most realistic sounding piano I can find cause I hate most of the emulated piano VSTs out there that I've tried. Don't even get me started on FL Keys. I think I might have another piano vst to turn to aside from 4front.

Thats cause its a multi sample of a real grand
A lot of the piano stuff is the same, just some record it better than others/have better engines, etc, etc..

True. I tried almost all the packs for Kontakt. they were all cheesy or just pure junk. Besides the alicia Keys piano for kontakt. That one is amazing

Can someone break this down for me real simple?
Are we talking about computer generated instruments here, or indivudual samples of notes?

I'm sure hes talking about good quality multi-sample instruments/physical modeling instruments

FL Keys is all you need really. Sounds pretty realistic with a bit of processing. Reason 4 comes with some nice piano samples in the nnxt. Piano isn't something you need to go wild looking for vsts for I find. Most of the basic ones you get with a daw will do the job fine. As for strings you're probs best finding samples if you can and using them. Vsts do a piss poor job emulating string sections. I tend to use samples then use a vst under it just to thicken the sound. Trumpets are the same for me, no vst I've ever used has ever come close to emulating it without it being hideous obvious that it's a vst. Probs best, again, finding samples.
