Better to be a pioneer that just another DJ playing the same boring set as the next guy.

all good advice but i don't think this guy was asking for basic djing tips!

At what stage did he say he'd be playing music he didnt like? He said the opposite:

Just don't really wanna clear the rave or compromise the sound I want to play

I always play music that I don't like
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

seriously though..

Play what you like, but play it really fucking well, and make sure those 4 people who start dancing, that could turn to 100 in the space of a tune if you smack it, stay dancing!

Me and Dawntreader played in notts the other day at a nice event on a bad night, at a kinda indie bar, where a few of these kinda nights have been either great or dead. Guy before had his horrible chainsaws outs, and we brought a progessive but fun set, starting with new house and techno and ended on harder FG and Funky kinda stuff. Went from clearing the floor, to convincing a few guys to bop there heads, to having a nice core of dancers, to having em buy the knackers.. you just got to perceiver.

You never know, there might be 5 heads getting down in the dark to your favourite bits, waiting to run out and dance, and the second you compromise you alienate these people

Whoah.

Looks like I started something.

As jackmaster quoted I'm not planning on changing what I like to play - otherwise I'd just keep playing chainsaw after the dude finished right? Just wanted to find out what peeps favourite tunes were for dancefloors not so clued up to appreciate the latest warp or mu release.

sorry to anyone who thinks i'm destroying the integrity of djing.

coax them in, then do your thing.

trg - since last night is a good BIG sounding tune that u could probs build from
zander hardy - attack (deep teknologi)
doc daneeka - deadly rhythm
count & sinden - mega

also alot of tracks by buraka som sistema, octapush, randomer, slachtofthebronx, trouble & bass crew would do this job.

in an ideal world you wouldnt have to adapt or sacrifice but having the willingness and ability to do this properly should only gain you more experience and hopefully more gigs and a better reputation. anyways there's good tunes to be found in every style/genre if u get my drift loike.

go for it man....but that advice that littlefoot gave below is proper. persist!

also i'd go for 'seasons' by lil silva, and pretty much any of zinc's crackhouse stuff.

I used to use the name Fake Cake, but now produce/DJ as Pedro Steez. The tunes on the soundcloud are only really muckarounds, I haven't put anything proper on there yet.

Although this is kinda the opposite of the situation you are in, I played straight before Doctor P one night. I started with stereotypical funky tunes e.g. Lil Silva, Crazy Cousinz, Ill Blu etc, then got into the more dutch house kinda stuff by Foamo, Laidback Luke & Co which the crowd seemed to love and ended with DJ Narrows - Saved Soul. Most of the suggestions put above seem to be spot on, jump-up dubstep crowds love any of Zinc's stuff in my experience, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Was a pretty popular tune, dude.

Always reminded me of this...

I know, that's why I gave it up. There were two in my initial post though.
