dancehall been goin downhill?

i used to be obsessed by dancehall, but in 2005 it seemed to all turn to cheese and soca. haven`t bought anything since then, when i finally go record shopping , i notice this.

Haven't bought any dancehall in ages (really don't get these riddim albums with 16 vocals over the same instrumental - is that not just boring as fuck). There's always been some shit dancehall - got an old greensleeves sampler that's 75% shite (including ones based on Karma Chameleon and That's the Way Uh-huh, uh-huh I like it) which I found hilarious.

Mind you the Cunty Frog things going a bit too far. Is dancehall just for ages 11 and under now?

i`ve bought loads of samplers and 1999-2003 there were sick riddims comin out all the time, liquid, g-string,martial arts, masterpiece, even diwali before it got rinsed. i think it takes a really amazin riddim to be able to listen to it 20 times with different mcs on it. but it has been done (with the ones i just mentioned i reckon)

I know how the riddim track thing works, but like you say if you want the specific cuts you get the 7's but there's a hell of a lot of releases, so if you're not a big dancehall listener and don't move in those circles (i.e. me) there's a hell of a lot of releases to plough through to find the gems.

And no, strangely I don't know much about reggae. Which is an admission I doubt you'll get from many people up here to be honest

@ Shonky - fair enough mate. Sorry for the aggy reply, i had one ttoo many stellas last night!

There is some drivel dancehall about, but that has always been the case due to the volume of music made. Some nice bits coming through though, although in my opinion the roots scene is very strong at the minute. Keep your eyes posted for my new Smoke on the Hills mixtape, dropping March - a mixture of new reggae and dancehall as per usual.

Another massive generalisation. Since when has (parts) of the dancehall scene ever not been cheesy as fuck?

Dancehall has always had pure slackness lyrics. If you dont understand/like it, then dont listen. Anyway, Movado, Bounty, Beenie, Buju,Capleton, Sizzla, Assassin - still hectic cuts on riddims every month.
