Basic Channel or Maurizio business as we use to call it definitely took it another direction fusing the dub and Eurocentric sounds-

Don’t know masses about them but these 2 were big and still sound heavy today

ALL Basic Channel and their Rhythm & Sound output is essential baggage.

They're absolute masters.

plus (as someone says above) Maurizio + Round One/Two/Three and then Ernestus + Oswald's solo stuff

for starters, since we're in the house thread

Basic Channel - just get the two cd comps as an introduction (BC-1 and BC-2, surprisingly), then seek out the 12s from there, they didn't do an enormous amount.

Rhythm & Sound - 'w/ The Artists' album, not techno though, its dub and reggae though with that BC twist

Rhythm & Sound - 'Aground/Aerial' 12" - probably the best thing they've ever done.

got a massive amount of Basic Channel, Rhythm and Sound records and those are the exact two tracks that I have as my essentials.

This also:

what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

beautiful song - i'd have this played at my funeral :!:
my best dj gig ever was a set to a room packed with 50 people proper up for deeper house music
started with this at 4am and also finished with this at 6am
and I pulled!
sorry for the digression

Great thread...on phone, but marked for later.

Missed Ernestus at DEMF but caught a bit of Scion on the Main Stage. Unfortunately it was during the day so the volume was a bit low. Still great music.

IMHO, the best way in - better than the BC compilations - is Scion's "Arrange and Process" mix CD:

http://www.discogs.com/Scion-Arrange-An ... ease/43996

It goes through the best of the Basic Channel techno/dub techno stuff rather than the straight up dub that M&M did as Rhythm And Sound, but it really is the final word in "basic channel presented at their techno best". Big, big mix.

(Scion = Substance & Vainqueur, aka DJ Pete + Rene Löwe)

Then, once you've gotten into everything they've ever made...... don't forget to move on. ;) Basic Channel have been fetishised beyond all reason within the techno community. (Not that they weren't absolutely brilliant, of course, but some people seem to forget that lots of other great music has been released since 1994...)
