Sup people

I've been lurking here for a while and haven't really contributed much so here we go...

Just started using pure data and thought i might post some stuff up to get people on their way if they are interested as its quite the steep learing curve. I'm still just learning but these have helped me immensely:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData/WhatIsDigitalAudio This site has some good explanations on pure data (pd). Also the first page "what is digital audio" gives some good explanations into how sound is actually made by computers.

started using this a few months ago, slowly getting there with it.

conditional logic is quite fun with the [expr] object

also been doing alot with sending midi data into ableton over a virtual midi port, extremly fun!

I use this all the time in combination with TouchOpenSoundControl on my iPhone and/or iPad to send MIDI to my DAW.

I've been curious about these types of programs for a while now. Might try to get into Pure Data now that I've got some time on my hands, but all that I've read about it being a lot more tedious to program than Max is kind've intimidating to be honest. I know at least with Max/Msp there are quite a lot of user-submitted patches on the internet, is this true for Pure Data as well? I definetly dont have the money to send Cycling 74 for their product, so PD might be a good starting point. Any thoughts?

I know there's quite a lot possible with these programs, like creating new synths and daws, as well as using them to turn old joysticks and video game controllers into midi controllers, but could you guys be a bit more specific as to what you use these programs for exactly and what are some of the more interesting possibilities?

Recently saw a video of Daedelus and says he's using Max/MSP in conjunction with his monomes and I'm curious - anyone have a guess as to what he's doing with Max here in this instance?

I'm afraid I don't have the answer to your question, but I feel the following needs to be said.

Daedalus is a fucking bamf.

EDIT: Wait, I actually do have an answer. As far as I know, he's using his monome to control loops. Each row is a loop, and each button on the X axis represents a certain point during the loop. Let's say you press the button halfway on the X axis on row 1, you'll start playing loop 1 halfway through.

haha yeah, it looks like he's just doing an ableton set or something, I had mistakenly thought the video comment said he was using Max/Msp with the monomes because of something i read earlier in the day, so I was curious what he could be doing with Max when it sounds like he's just triggering loops.

He should just use renoise!

As for PD...I'm just getting into it but its fun...

Good for making drum machines and granulizers. I found there is maths involved tho, u need to know ur numbers!

There is also a smug satisfaction of saying I F**king made this from scratch!

Well to answer your question about the Daedelus video chances are he's using the monome as a controler for his MAX patch. By taking the data output from the monome and using it to make the MAX patch do different things (eg loop, start sample playback from different points, changing DSP etc)

http://puredata.info/ has a whole sub forum for user made patches so there is no shortage of stuff you can download and have a look at.

Now here's what I use Pd for: effects processing (for my signal processing uni assignment I made a convolution reverb using Pd) and I've made a couple of synths (with like 32 sawtooth oscillators or something ridiculous like that)

is definitley using max msp in that vid you can see it on his laptop, not exactly sure what hes doin tho, but afaik you need to use something like max to communicate with a monome, max can feedback messages for which lights to turn on etc (you can see hes got the other little monome showing the signal levels).

I think the far right button on each row reverses the loop and maybe selecting buttons along the row go to different parts of the loop, sure theres more to it then that though!

There's no secrets with Daedalus he's frequently on the monome board and is a real nice guy.
He's using version 2.51 of mlr created by enjoi with the 256 and 64 monomes. You can get the patch here:

Yes, it was created by one of the guys who made MAX.

we'll be using max/msp at college so i've been playing around with pure data a bit lately. just following some basic tutorials and shit.

i have a question though. i know that pure data and max/msp are very similar. but let's say i spend the next 18 months using pure data will i find it difficult to switch to max/msp? basically what i'm asking is should i just lump on max/msp now and learn that (because i will be eventually using it for college shit).

Havent used PD but from what ive seen the concepts will transfer and a lot of it looks identical...you might want to start with max now though, so you can use your work now for projects + assignments later
