Once the new record is in the store, the artist has already been paid. Just because a consumer doesn't buy it from retail doesn't mean the artist didn't get paid. If it just sits there, it's just unlikely that said artist will have another release.hayze99 wrote:Anyone who's bought a second hand record is just as guilty as the pirates - you're getting music, knowing that 0% of it goes to the artist. As far as music goes, their tunes constantly get ripped from youtube.

Re: limewire?
Mmmm. I don't advocate piracy, and spend a massive amount of cash on retail records (+dubsteppers collection
), but I'm just saying the issue's more complicated than 'pirate's suck - they steal our cash moniez'
Again, a person who has spent 10,000 squid on second hand records off someone is contributing just as much to the artist as someone who obtains 1000 free albums. The only difference is the latter got them second-hand, for free. The reason it's seems like an awkward argument is because obviously the former is more likely to still be contributing in other ways.
I told this kid to rapidshare it because anyone who posts something like that is not going to buy anything anyway, and nobody deserves the torture of limewire. Hopefully he'll download a few songs for free, learn about the genre, gain an understanding about the industry, get close to community and begin to support the artists. Without it, a lot of people would not be able to make enough progress through a genre as dense as dubstep to cling on and find their niche, unless they lived right in the scene, or unless they were millionaires.
I mean, do you really think a genre like dubstep would have spread across the world so fast without youtube / illegal downloading? All those shitty fans who don't pay for music just serve as information vessels to find passionate fans who do.
Purchases go to;
-DJ's
-Obsessives
-Collectors
-Real humble fans, who appreciate the music and the artists
Anyone outside this spectrum wasn't going to buy anything in the first place. Might as well use them to pass on the message to the masses who might fall into these categories.
As dubstepper said, there were always bootlegged tapes sold in the market, and I'm sure there were plenty of rip-off mona-lisas hanging around. The only difference is that the internet brings the overheads to 0.
tl;dr - piracy spreads information to people who will then contribute
Just some more food for thought.

Re: limewire?
Couldn't agree more with the above.
I'll be honest and admit that I do pirate music as well as other things quite frequently, but if I feel it's an outstanding product or that creator (developer, artist, etc) deserves to be paid, I have absolutely no hesitation in buying it. I'd say at least 40% of the music I download I end up paying for later anyways. And the ones I don't pay for, I end up not listening to anyways. Same goes for software and games (although to a lesser extent because a massive developer/publisher such as Activision or Adobe deserves the money less than some small artist), if I see that it's a product that I know I will use often and enjoy using, I will gladly pay for it. And if I don't pay for it, I rarely use it. This applies especially to all of the software I use for producing. I pirate it all to "demo" and if I'm satisfied I'll go and buy a legit copy, and obviously, if I'm not satisfied, I don't buy it and don't use it.

Re: limewire?
A record store can't buy 20 copies of a record, sell one, and get a refund on 19 from the distributor just because they bought more than they could sell, they go into the clearance bin. So regardless if the record sells from the store at $10 or $1, the artist, label, distro have already made their money. It's got nothing to do with how the record is sold at the retail level, it's got everything to do with how it leaves the distributor.deadly habit wrote:very few labels especially in a genre as small as this give advances anymore especially on vinyl releasessouth3rn wrote:Once the new record is in the store, the artist has already been paid. Re: limewire?
Sure, but obviously if it sells well the record store is going to buy more copies, and most likely more copies of any other releases the artists has in the future.south3rn wrote:A record store can't buy 20 copies of a record, sell one, and get a refund on 19 from the distributor just because they bought more than they could sell, they go into the clearance bin. Re: limewire?
For sure, and the same applies to used records. If the store notices that artist X's used records are selling well, they would be inclined to stock new copies of recent work. I think the "buying used records is like illegally downloading" statement is incredibly thoughtless.

Re: limewire?
true, but some distributors do shit on consignment (P&D deals anyone) so they always see their money, then the label, lastly the artist.south3rn wrote:A record store can't buy 20 copies of a record, sell one, and get a refund on 19 from the distributor just because they bought more than they could sell, they go into the clearance bin.
