This fellow, Mr Nick Drake, pretty sad old chap really, but the boy could pluck a guitar and hold a note to make you want to look that little bit further at the condition of your soul.

Its very english, middle class, folk music.

Otherwise the sound is deep, definitley melancholic and beautiful.

You must check out Chet Baker.

From the east coast white boy clean cut ilk of Jazz musicians and despised by Miles Davis.

The thing with Chet was, although his songs were all about the innocence of young love and his image was one of the James Dean of Jazz, his real passion was for speed balls and he was a lying cheating junkie who cared little for anyone's life other than his own.

There's a dark edge that he evokes through the fragility of his 'all American - mom and apple pie' smooth honey vocals.

If you imagine that in his day when he would sing and play his horn, girls would swoon and faint in his presence. When you here voice and see the way he looks it's quite easy to imagine.

The way his lyrical content and image never matched up to the reality of his life makes listening that much more interesting.

So, there is lots of cheesy cocktail lounge sounding music but songs like

'The thrill is gone'
'you don't know what love is'
'my funny valentine'

are as melancholic as they get.

He's probably most famous for his take on 'my funny valentine'.

Remember, he was never trying to innovate in the same way that miles Davis was. Miles Davis was probably rightly pissed because black Jazz musicians were losing out on gigs to white jazz musicians who were easier to market in the social climate of 1950's America.

The book 'Deep In A Dream — The Long Night of Chet Baker' is a real depressing read; documenting the short lived rise and fast and lengthy fall of chet as he plays bad gigs after bad gig just to get money to score.

Of note,you should check out the live version Rachelle Ferrell(Blue Note Recs.) did on her album "First Instrument".It is one of the few tunes that will actually make me break down and lose it big time.The way she sings...it is pure emotion.She truly sounds like a broken woman crying out for her lover in the chill of the fall.Floors me everytime I hear it.I have about 15 or so versions of 'Autumn Leaves' and none holds a candle to that one.

I will definitely check that out. On the jazz note Nina Simone - My man's gone now is one of those songs that always makes me hush the room. Any of her albums could stop you in your tracks.
