What Is Grime?

Post by briskisgoodforu » Sat Jul 03, 2010 6:17 pm

Can someone from the UK please explain to this American what grime is. I dunno if I get it. Is it 130 bpm british rap? And they rap faster and emphasize different down beats than hip hop?

hah dude cmon, no one takes british rap seriously in the states. I don't think I even know anyone whose even tried to listen to it. I was just looking it up out of curiosity.

I still don't see what defines it. How is it not just rap, but with a faster beat, and a fast flow? I mean I guess its not really hip hop cuz its doesn't have the same roots and the whole sampling thing and general amen break, but is that all it needs to be it's own thing?

i think that from the subject matter, style of instrumental, and lyrics you can easily tell a grime tune from a hip hop tune. also i listen to a lot of grime, but not a lot of hip hop (anymore) so it is important for it to be its own thing. Ultimatly its come from different roots ie. the UK garage scene.

It's not 'british rap'. a lot of it may just sound similar to hip-hop today but the difference is grime is a lot less sample based unlike hip-hop where the beat is nearly all just samples. more of an emphasis on the bass as well, and grime is usually 140bpm compared to 80-100 for hip-hop and the beat can vary from a half-step pace to whatever. dubstep and grime have similar roots and didn't really have any hip-hop influence when it started at all. Just because there are MCs spitting over the beats, it doesn't make it hip-hop. UK hip-hop is very different.

Indeed. I remember a few UK Hiphop people saying that Grime IS Englands answer to hiphop, in as "street music" (even though I hate words like "street" and "urban" .....) so I guess in non-'it came from uk garage' terms, you could say its Englands take on hiphop.

I personally live by the 'it came from ukg' theory haha..

Either way grime is messy and theres some instrumentals what you'd go absolutely doolally over and its worth investing time into learning the roots and progression to its (in my opinion) dreadful decline.
