I'm new, and need some advice

Hey guys, new to the forum - infact just signed up about 10 minutes ago! Hey everyone

So, I'm new to the forum, but i have had FL for a while now and have been messing around with dubstep for maybe about 6 months. I just have been watching videos and things recently and have realised that my knowledge is very little compared to others. I have tried using Ableton, but I have got so familiar with FL that I just can't make the change. But I do have alot of love for FL

So anyway, I have two VST's that I mainly use which are; Native Instruments' Massive, and Cakewalks z3ta + And they are both great, Massive especially as it is a great tool for wobbles. I just feel that I'm somehow making the process alot harder for myself due to my insignificant knowledge, but this I dont mind. I know that i will only find it harder trying to change my ways. So anyway, I'm rambling - I need more names, not tutorials and things. I need names of programs on FL which are essential to it. I know about using the mixer and reverb and all that, it's just other things that I get bogged down with, I mean I only recently learned how to fade in, and I already can't remember. I listen to dubstep, and wonder how the hell I will ever find how to use effects the was they do.

I also feel that I have no inspiration. I don't like listening to other peoples music and trying to get ideas, as I feel I am ripping off their music. I find bass and wobbles easy to make, and make sound good. But when it comes to things like rythms and synths, I get a mind block. And don't get me wrong - who doesn't love a smoke, but me being 16 and all, I rarely smoke near home. And even if i wanted to I never have any money, and my moped doesnt run itself either...

And recently I googled up 'DAW' because I had'nt a clue what it meant, but now knowing - I prefer to call it my 'DCS' (Dubstep Creation Station) Hope this catches on!

Anyway, I've just about bored the (insert bad word here) out of you all so i'll stop now. Any advice would be music to my ears! Thanks everyone

Good stuff, IMO you should find one tool to use and learn to use it asleep with your eyes closed, if you like FL, then stick at it.

My advice would probably be: Experiment. Make a bass sound, put an effect on it that you have no idea what it does and tweak every knob, you can't break anything (as long as you don't save over things ). I was one of those people who as soon as I bought ACID Pro 7, disregarded the manual completely and just fiddled with things, when I wanted to find out how to apply an effect or something, I'd maybe refer to the manual then, but I learnt 90% of what I know from just playing around with things. Don't feel you need to know everything straight away, you only need to know something when you need to apply the knowledge.

If you want some good VST Effects/Tools, I'd recommend Voxengo SPAN as a frequency analyzer, TAL Dub Delay as a cool stereo delay unit and some form of compressor, such as Rough Rider (All of these are free plug ins to the best of my knowledge).

Try and find inspiration in non-dubstep music, I've been listening to loads of old Sinatra records, Mr Scruff, DJ Shadow, Dr Dre to take my mind off dubstep, when I'll hear a sound in a song that I like, so thats the moment when I fire up the DAW and get going

dubstep is a pretty cool music.

u need to do the following things and considering uve been using FL for 6 months it should be cake:

1. make drums like this: [k] .. .. .. .. .. .. [k] .. .. .. .. .. .. and insert hihat
2. make bass and only use the black keys. wobble in 1/16th LFO rate
3. make sub = sine and EQ+10 DB at around 0-100 hz
4. insert movie sample or some other shit like youtube movie or transformer

its pretty hard but it sound easy. just try and make experiment

I was using FL too up until about 6 months ago. I went through the ableton built in tutorial and looked at a few dubstep tutorial vids online (took about a day) and haven't looked back. It's just so much quicker to throw stuff together in ableton these days, whereas it used to the complete opposite.

If you are happy sticking with FL do so, but really, it doesn't take long to make a switch to a new DAW at all and I'm getting much better results out of Live than I ever did with FL.

if it was a matter of downloading i would have switched to ableton long ago.

FL is an affordable option. ableton is expensive. i've you're just a 16 year old butt pirate then you should be learning on ableton.

Nothing wrong with checking out other producers tunes to get ideas like: how'd he do that breakdown/intro/transition e.g - whatever.. Get your own sounds, samples/synths and re-create the bits that you like. Not note for note but just to get the juices flowing in the right direction of the track your working on. Thats how you learn mate (few buds don't hurt either )

don't think i agree with this, i've been using ableton nearly 2 years now and even though i can get down what i want without any trouble and got shortcuts down etc... i know that there is still shitloads i have to learn about the program. i think learning your DAW is probably the most time-consuming part of production.

there is a lot to be said for sticking with what you know when it comes to DAWs.

On any knob in FL:

Right click>Create Automation clip

In the sequencer a graphic will come on and you can right click on it to add points and drag them up and down.

E.g. to bring your drums in smoothly add a Fruity Fast LP to the mixer channel, right click on filter cutoff>create automation clip, and then draw stragiht line from bottom of it to top and voila

Then play with automation on all sorts of things to acheive variaty within your sounds
