BBE Sonic maximizer

Post by mattyseizure » Tue Jul 13, 2010 9:49 pm

Did a quick search on here, but nothing came up. Does anyone use this? If so what on? etc. Ive just had a play around using it in the mastering stage, got a good result but not to sure what I am doing.

Cheers

It's not really anything like Inflator :? It sounds like an audio equivalent of chalk on a blackboard. Seriously.

You think it's great, then after a while you wonder why everything sounds brittle, so you turn it down. Then you start to clock it even more so you turn it down more... and so on until you just turn it off. I never even went near the bass knob after trying it once or twice. Wool-tastic.

So basically it's wooly-low-end-and-brittle-high-end machine. Magic  Get a decent eq, and get handy with it - you will thank yourself :)

The oooonly thing I would still use it for is half-decently recorded acoustic guitar, but even then there are a huge number of infinitely better options these days.

in the world of things that do what the BBE does, it sounds fucking awful. the free dfx exciter or whatever that comes with cubase sounds like ass, but sounds better than the bbe.

Essentially, dynamic distortion.

I fuggin love the inflator. Got it as a student pack on their website.

Macc have you used their dynamics channel? What else would you rate??? (apart from UAD soft plugs. sorry a bit off topic)

I tried the Sonnox dynamics once on demo... didn't buy it. Thought it was alright, sounded a bit fake to me, especially the warmth thing. Better than PSP VW and so on, but... I dunno, probably should have tried it for longer.

I just finished my first tune in three years (hooray!) and tinking about it, it was 99% UAD. They're just great for mixing. The only non-UAD plugs I used were Elephant and LP10.

When I'm mastering I generally use one clean plugin eq and a limiter (Elephant) with all the rest done in hardware, so that's not much good... sorry!

Why someone as austere as macc uses it, for starters?

How it sounds?

What does it do that others don't do?

What type of settings does it excel at?

That kind of thing.

Bloody 'ell, austere?!

I've been called a lot of things in my time - mostly 'a c#nt' - but I've never been called austere.

Jeez, I need to sort my posting style out. I do try to keep it light!

P.S. I'll post something about Elephant once I have stopped being massively depressed :6:

sonnox EQ is quite nice, and i like their limiter as well-- great control, not a lot of sex appeal, nice, transparent-sounding dither. Elephant definitely gives you the clipping sexytime.

Sony's plugs really shine in their problem-solvers-- de-clicking, de-essing, transmod, and inflator. Tho the inflator will definitely suck away punch while giving you volume-- it can be nice in parallel tho.

^yes please

Tried the Sonic Maximizer plugin a few times because I read it was pretty decent but I'd always end up bypassing it after fiddling around and leave it off.
Anyone know any other yummy magic no-work-involved make-everything-sound-betterizers? :6:
Preferably something that actually sounds good and isn't a UAD plug hah

I forgot about the SPL Vitaliser plugin. Used that on a few things, sounded nice in certain applications. Bit fake sounding at times but everything in moderation.
I probably wouldn't use any of these plugins on the 2 buss... Getting into some projects spicing up drums though so I will most likely find new uses for em there.
