Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JULY, 2010

Post by Fonnovo » Tue Jul 20, 2010 8:57 am

a lot of things have happened in the past few months, I used to work with Reason, and for a couple of years I created a bunch of songs trying to find my own sound, anyway, this was the result http://www.myspace.com/esebarreto

so then i started working with Renoise, and with my head on dubstep, i know enough about sound design and a couple of other stuff, but the mixing/eq-ing has never been my fav part of producing.

here's one of a few songs I'm working on, any feedback would be much appreciated.

Like the choice of sample and that Piano.. nice to hear something that dosn't go OTT on the F**th, haha
I dunno if it's me though, but sounds like the Sub's clipping? Could do with bringing the kick out a bit more as well, 'cos it's a fair bit lost

Going for a very minimal feel here with the intro BUT I'm in two minds about overloading it with hi hats?
Needs a bit more general ambience- toying with some filtered white noise but dosn't seem that orginal these days.
Should I kick it up a notch after the drop, orrr keep it slow?
So many options here, I just don't want to over do it, haha

Few more little things added. Added piano over top of the synth in the melody. I think it sounds better.

Bradicle: yeh man, the piano over the top sounds better. Love the sound of your bass aswell man! And especially loving the Joker samples.

Any ideas on how I could improve this?

@JemGrover yes, definitely the sub is way too loud, i started to check my thang but i'm lost, i think i need better filters, or tweaking the final dsp chain. i heard your's and it seems to me that a lil hp filter on the hi hats would not hurt anyone, also about the whole ambience thing, instead of adding pads and white noises and shit why don't you play with the same sounds you already have, i like to send my snare on a send and a full wet reverb and then some filtering and toying with the signal (maybe wobbling the reverb 8) ), i think it would work particularly great with those stabs you got there

still needs lots of mixdown/EQ work, more FX and lots more variation to drum pattern, as well as little flourishes here and there.. but this is the jist so far
I dig this a lot. Bass drum gets a little lost after the break, but I'm a fan overall for an unmixed/eq'd track. Oh how important the sidechain is to a bass drum's health...

Mouldy Soul wrote:@sesG nice tune, like the pads at the start give a nice atmosphere, and the breaks are nice and progressive, nice mixdown, doesn't sound studio wuality but it sounds more like a band recording with synths, which is no bad thing if you were intentionally going for that, and it sounds like you were so well done, sorry for that stupid rant, but yeah reckon you could have some masive build up instead if ending then drop in to nothing and build back up and drop into something you know the normal dance music way! :)

@airabam nice sound but you might need to high pass some of the sounds as they are interfereing with the low end too much and just sounds like slutter. Cool ideas though interesting use of sounds, but a little too repetitive, needs to evolve and not stay trapped in this crazy level of the game!

@kontrol, nice ambience and space but just wished it lasted for longer, the intro is very minimal but cool still, just wish it progressed into a proper tune and you'know got some other tings going on, like a melody or two! Or a harmony!

@bradicle, nice drums fat sound everything sounds well produced innit, nice samples of pianos and general amience pad sounds and shiz, cheesy voice sample "music is my life" butu fuck it! very jump uppy, fatt tight bass though well controlled :) Please don't use that sample as may time as you have.
Gets well cheesy towards the end with the girls singing, but still nice and musical just not my cuppa tea, good mixdown overall and tings :)

Can I get a feedback on dis please :) Favours will be returned :) :

Really like that squishy bass line. Love that this track just drops into some straight skaaanky shite round the minute mark. Kinda wish it went somewhere else, but I can feel the minimalism. That you playing the git box? Kinda reminds me of Opiuo, but not too much that it's a bad thing

JBE wrote:@Colourless: 2 of your tracks didn't load so I only got to hear Vocal-less and Snare. Vocal-less was to sporadic for me. The leads really didn't make much sense. Snare was sort of the same. The percussions were decent, could use some variation on those bongo type drums. The sounds just didn't work for me at all and for the most part didn't really sound like they belonged together.

@ObsidiaMusic: Liked the Supernova Preview. Interested to hear where you take it from there.

@Dub2play: Interesting idea for a remix. definitely cool.

@Mars: It had good sound but just way too much pitch bending IMO. It's hard to get into any kind of groove while listening to it when every other note is a long pitch bend.

@Airlabam: There's just entirely way to much distortion. It doesn't even sound like music, just a bunch of noise layered on top of each other. If that was your intent then you've accomplished it. I would definitely work on fixing the levels and clearing out a bit of that distortion so you can at least hear what is going on.

@Hakka: Not something you really expect with DnB. It's definitely got that summer type sound. That second lead you bring in around 2:10 really doesn't sound right at all to me. Sound way off key to the main sound. I think it could definitely use some more bass of some sort to at least give a bit more of that DnB feel. Definitely liked the rest of it though.

So here's something I started working on a few days ago. It's got that older dubstep style. Been listening to a lot of that stuff lately and it inspired this track.

Daamn son. Drum levels are a touch hot, but damn. I can dig it like a grave. The throb on that sub is superb, as far as I'm concerned.

@ fonnovo: I like the chords in the rhodes line. Likin the use of samples also. Not sure about the mid-range wobble, though. Timbre could be a bit more chill, n its a tad loud imo, but overall a good base track.

This is the first tune I've posted on DSF. Made an attempt to master it myself. Used Reason for production, then bounced down to individual tracks that I popped into Logic. The sound effect at the end was for absolutely no reason other than to make the track length 420. Feedback would be much appreciated, and obviously I'd be more than happy to give my two cents to anyone. Much love and maad respect to all yall bass folk

@ NICORISONE, pretty good man, GREATT SCOTT!
@ stiggitysteve, love the feel on your tune. Real chill and the drums are quite nice, keep it up.

How's it going guys, I started this project last night. Nothing serious, just something smooth and easy. Check it.

@ nny . Thanks mate. Sounding all good dude. In my opinion way too much reverb on everything. Sort ya drums out. Eg maybe get some faster hats if you're having slow kicks. The bass sounds muffled, play around with that :). Nice sounding bass synth though :)

@Tripwire I'm digging the vibe of the whole thing, but it sounds like it never quite climaxed. I know its only like a minute 50 but it definately has some unexplored potential. that marimba line at the end was ripe for a heavy second drop to come in under it.
heres some improvements on mine
