Up to 140 "Earths" found by Kepler Space Probe

Post by pårson » Tue Jul 27, 2010 5:16 am

Nasa's Kepler space probe has found more than just 706 potential new planets — it may also have found five new solar systems.

Buried in the deluge of data sent back by the probe are clear signs that at least five of the 150,000-plus stars it has studied may have two or more planets in orbit around them. Some appear similar to Earth.

Up to 140 of the newly found planets are rocky and Earth-like containing both land and water, conditions which could allow simple lifeforms to develop.

If you're not being sarcastic, prepare for the TinfoilHat backlash.

interesting point. hopefully some clever human will think of something. since the belts are only moderately dangerous for humans to cross, perhaps thats a risk that survivors of a futuristic apocalypse are willing to take :P

okay... maybe "significantly" dangerous was the right word...

but still... if i, personally, had no other choice, i would take that chance... out of outright curiosity (not survival)

fascinating....

but, since i had no idea that this was going on (four years ago)... i think that scientists are interested in this and are working on a solution.

definitely not arguing your point... just saying that someone is probably working to fix that problem

...will they succeed? i hope so, for my curiosity's sake.

either way, i thank you for expanding my horizons/interest, you're quite a bit smarter than most of the other aggro posters here... i think i'll start to give you more credence than the others...

This is pretty cool, and those 140 are only from the first 4 weeks of Kepler's mission! They have 204 week's worth left to go through

amazingly underwhelming
is anyone stupid enough to not figure out that their are countless earth like planets in the infinity that is the universe?
or does that idea only become viable when ol' papa nasa says so

I was watching a documentary on that, it's really interesting how the guy came up with it.... space is soon not to be just another frontier.

No. It's strikingly obvious that there would be similiar planets out there. But it's nice to put some evidence to a hypothesis no?
