Go to amritsar and see the golden temple, amazing place. make sure you get someone to take you around and explain it all, as there is some amazing history there.
if you're around the himalayas its worth checking out some of the hill stations like Simla. amazing places, the hills are a real blend of nepalese, tibetan and indian culture.
Generally i reckon the best part of north india is the punjab, but i may be quite biased as all of my family is from there.
Best thing to do is look on net at train lines and plan your journey around that.... its the best way of seeing a wider area.
make sure you always take toilet roll around with you. look at the kitchen of an eatery before purchasing food there. be prepared for squatting shits.
try and go on an indian safari, some great national parks about.
any questions let me know ive been there many many times.
good luck!!!

I really want to spend some time travelling around India, just hopping between places on the railway lines for a few months looks like it could be an amazing experience. Maybe i'll do it for gap year or something.

Going to Nepal on Tuesday for 16 days. Can't wait!
Re: India??
safe man, you will have a good time. Like someone said mcleodganj is very cool, but I'd say you can't really go wrong anywhere in Himachel pradesh. Also, if you're feeling more dearing, head up to kashmir. It is held by a lot of the indian army, but I find quite exciting.
Basically I love mountainous scenary, so if you do too, check out those places. Also spend some time in the city

Re: India??
I know it doesn't get the best press but Kashmir is really worth the effort. The journey from Jammu to Srinagar is amazing though white knuckle at times. Rent a houseboat on lake dal, lots of good deals to be had as most tourists avoid the area. Try to avoid spending too much time in Jammu though, it's a shit-hole.

Re: India??
thats a pretty sick route. yeah basically my mate wanted to go for years, so i said id take him even though iv been a billion times over.... but pretty much each time ive gone ive been with family to see more family. iv seen the himalayas, dehli, calcutta, and the punjab more times than i can count, but never really been much south of that so it should be interesting. this all depends on my monetary situationtr0tsky wrote:Leaving for Chennai on 1st November.

Re: India??
I've never been to India with/to see my family. The first time I went when I was 16 was with my cuz but that doesn't could because we spent out time getting pissed and stoned.
I went to India in March this year too, was pretty sweet but I only went to Mumbai, Delhi and Varanasi.
I love India.

Ah, don't answer that...obviously hard work...
Pondicherry, I'm particularly envious of...

Kerala might in the most general terms suit my politics but not despite my name I'm no fan of Stalinism.
And I don't know what the contradiction between working and having leftist politics are.
I'm very much looking forward to Puducherry (which doesn't have the same ring as Pondicherry but let the fuckers call their town what they want), I've never been to South India before least of which Tamil Nadu.

Re: India??
Manali and Mcleod Ganj are both cool places in himachal pradesh. You can do treks in the himalayas from both places. it might be better this time of year as well cuz it will be less hot. Best place to go if you're looking to chill - plenty of cheap charas, laid back atmosphere great scenery. Jaisalmer is definetely worth a visit for a camel safara in the thar desert, but every hotel owneer there will constantly hassle you to go with them. Pushkar and jodhpur are both great rajastani towns, jodhpur especially is pretty unique in that its just intensely busy all the time and has cool winding streets for getting lost in.
Varanasi is a definite choice for any trip to india, and i would say if you're going there its only a days travel to kathmandu and pokhara in nepal

Re: India??
Haha I remember my short time in Jodhpur involved me feeling insanely sick so I was bed ridden in a scummy room for a couple of days. (I was buy myself) I had to leave the next day so I thought I had to try and make myself get out and see the cool fort on the hill, I ended up getting quite delirious and lost, I started up that really steep hill but became quickly very sick and started vometing on the side of the street and just lay there for a while (not sure how long just remember an indian woman coming up to me looking quite worried). Bad idea. Anyway the rest of the trip was amazing.j-sh wrote:Manali and Mcleod Ganj are both cool places in himachal pradesh.
