DSF Sessions : Battle Time
So me n the guys have been batting this idea around since we started doing the sessions, and seeing as summer heat has us all feeling the friendly competitions, I think itd be a great time to go for it if everyones up? Ive heard people suggesting a dj mix off alot lately as well, and this would be a perfect means of getting it done.
the way we've proposed things will work, feel free to make suggestions within reason though... and if everyone can tell me if this sounds fair, youd be gems!
Everything would be done tournament style, for example...
a vs. b - a win
c vs d. - d wins
e vs f. - e wins
g vs. h - h wins
round 2
a vs. d - d wins
e vs. h - h wins
round 3 -
d vs. h - d wins
make sense?
proposed rules:
1. All sets will be a half hour long maximum
2. All tunes must be either
----A> Commercially available tunes
----B> be writeen and distributed by standing members of dubstepforum
This is to assure that, theoretically, all the DJs will have access to the same material, and having unreleased or VIP material from major artists will not sway the vote.
3. You must run no more then 2 tracks playing at once, and you cannot incorporate outside loops or synthesizers. This is meant to help assure noone will be given an unfair advantage due to kit. we all know ableton and ect. can provide for whole synth racks when playing live, and that many of you own multiple players, giving you the chance to play nearly unlimited numbers of track simultaneously. However. one must admit this is very unfair to those who use expensive but considerably more restricted vinyl and ect.
4. No dead dead silences or rewinds. All tracks must be MIXED.
5. No MC's
6. Only one dj at a time, groups are to register as seperate djs.
7. Failure to appear for your timeslot and any advance rounds will be considered a forefit.
8. Good vibes only. Me n noways recent tune battle, the sample pack contests, ect. should stand as examples that FRIENDLY and COMPETITION can go hand in hand. No bum hurt losers, no gloating winners, at the end of the day, these titles mean absolutely nothing, and this is all in great fun.
would anyone, other then me and upstateface, be into this idea?
If so lets start negotiating dates and getting the roster set up.

It's bin pissing down here for a long time now but I wouldn't be feeling this in a heatwave.
Rule 3 confirms that you definitely have a problem with Ableton(etc.)and maybe that because you, personally, can't/won't do it you wouldnt want anyone else to in case it swayed, what is essentially, your popularity contest.
Either way, I'm out.
Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
I'd have a good, but im seriously lacking in vinyl. Could probably only put 1 half hour dubstep set together, and a 45 minute dnb set.

Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
Isn't it kinda pointless to have, for instance, a deep set vs a brostep set ?
How about we sort that by category ?
I'm in anyway.
Heavyweight category btw

Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
Oh and why having both time & max tunes limits ?
Max time seems fine but those who like to mix faster should be able to, shouldn't they ?

Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
One last thing.
Why dubplates wouldn't be allowed ? I don't have any but if someone does, I don't see why they couldn't use them.
Having access to such material is part of the quality of a DJ so since it's a contest, it's 100% fair to me to use anything you have at your disposal.
So... anybody else not feeling rules 1 to 4 ?

Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
Rule number 3 says nothing bad about ableton? It only prevents you guys from having a serious advantage over people who run vinyl only rigs? And for the record, I run a digital enabled rig, though not ableton, I do operate a daw when I mix, so this is not my can/wont... Im not even sure Ill be entering in this BECUASE I helped make the rules... So you cant accuse me of using that for my own taste anyway man. Quit moaning. Thats more then fair.AnalGangstaHo wrote:Basic A wrote: seeing as summer heat has us all feeling the friendly competitions

And besides. This rule puts jsut as much restriction on those of us who have multiple hardware players as it does on you running ableton. Cry me a river, build a bridge, and find a way to get over it. This rule is one of the most nessasary to keep everything fair on both sides.
We spent alot of time discussing that but I feel like not dividing into genre will only prove to make the DJ's think a little harder about thier selections. Youll be needing to appeal to both sides, much as you would have to if you were playing a diverse club night... so IMO, itll make things more interesting. Besides that, Ill make an effort to turn out an unbiased listener set when it ocmes to this sort of thing.daft tnuc wrote:Isn't it kinda pointless to have, for instance, a deep set vs a brostep set ?

If more people raise objections though I will categorize it. it seems a little counter-intuitive to me though, not only does it take some of the challenge out of things, but it also will have me cutting the number of competitors in half, and the audiences as well. A big reason Im doing this is to make both sides feel welcome on the channel at any time... This might defeat that if we split.
Absoloutely, however, Im going to have to manage the posting of ALOT of tracklists here, and also recording of ALOT of streaming sets. This rule was made out of time restrictions and convenience when I have to set up the voting only. Its also flexible... Perhaps I should raise the limit to 20, and focus more on enforcing time then tune limit?daft tnuc wrote:Oh and why having both time & max tunes limits ?

Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
This is once again, to keep things fair. As I said, we dont need someone dropping a VIP plate and winning based on another producers skills. Originally, we were considering having a 10 track pack of only forum members tunes which could be used, but we decided this wasnt fair for vinyl enthusiasts. Just as the ableton djs cant use loops to win a set over, vinyl djs cant win based on connections with producers or labels. Fairness.daft tnuc wrote:One last thing.

And WHAT could you problem POSSIBLY be with 'no dead silences or rewinds'... this is more effort to keep everything fair to vinyl and digital alike, and effectively should say no scratching or rewinds... things that arent technically possible on digital mediums.
Things HAVE to be fair. I cna tprove when people are htting sync buttons or id outlaw those two. For a competition to be valid, everyone must be within a set of limitations. This cant be a free for all.

Haha, I could get about 5 of us for this (probably all at the same time too at the studio) if the time is good.

Not moaning, just that whenever digital djing gets mentioned you seem to always bring the negs and always comes across as bitterness. Would love to hear a set from your mega set up asap and poss a discussion as to why x is better than y. For the record I don't dj with Live and couldn't give two fucks what others use so long as they bring the noise, sayyyn?Basic A wrote: Quit moaning.

Id hardly call my fallin apart piece of shit any kind of mega setup, its just cdjs and a netbook, its never about the boxes its about how you wire them.AnalGangstaHo wrote:Not moaning, just that whenever digital djing gets mentioned you seem to always bring the negs and always comes across as bitterness. Re: DSF Sessions : Battle Time
30 minutes is quite long though. why not one of those 10 minute mixes?
cant imagine listening to 50 diffrent 30 minute mixes.id forget which one was good, especially if theres a set song set.
Thats just my opnion.
