So here are my 50 cents! Will try to be objectively critic with this, please take it constructively and take the suggestions for improvement as just that.

LONG DISTANCE
Nice pad tracers on the intro. Really nice rich bass sound. Combines perfectly with the pad following it. Solid percussion. Maybe melody progression didn't go as far as it could, but there are some really nice variants on the main theme. Very transparent sounding, good tonal range and good mixing throughout, maybe a break could have improved the arrangement, but since its a 3 min piece, oh well. All in all one of may top favorites

THE SHOODY SHAKEDOWN
Nice intro, BUT, 30 seconds in and that brass sample sound comes in out of tune! Maybe that was experimental? Maybe it was just the wrong tone and it seems more like the 2nd one. Then a very cool 2-stepy percussion comes in and then the bass the harmonies are a bit all over the place. This happens after with some other samples as well. There are some good ideas and the arrangement is not bad. This tune has potential but needs a lot of work on the harmonies.

SAMPLE RIDDIM
Good tempo and walking rhythm, but again some harmonies don't really seem to work on my ear: there are samples here and there that don't really match with the bass line. Maybe this was going for a more acid feel but a bit more classical harmonies would be an improvement in my view.

DISPERSION
Brilliant drop and awesome sound design on the vibrating liquidy-bassy sort of instrument! (would love to know how it's been done) Really cool ambient spacey background and nice mysterious synth theme. The reggae stabbs help it a lot. Could have improved the last 20 seconds and go off with a bit more class but a good one over all. One of my fabs as well.

AFTER MIDNIGHT
Cool dub but seems to be missing a bit on the lower end! Could have also done with a few more spacey ambient delayed/reverrbed hits and stabs here and there, like in DISPERSION, or maybe accenting the ones here a bit more but in general is a very nice ambient tune. Good work on the percussion.

FOOTSTEPS
Nice soundscape. Missing a bit the lower end as well. A bit more work on the percussion would help, in general is very good but giving a bit of velocity to the shakers to make it swing a bit would make things a bit more interesting.

THE WAY YOU ARE
After this long intro the drop (if there was such intention) feels a bit week but then there is a cool crescedo towards the second break. Hopefully at 1.50 a very cool percussion comes to the rescue and the tune suddenly becomes interesting. Maybe a bit too much use of the constant brass soundscape, moving it a bit like you do at the end would have made the tune more interesting.

WET DESERT
Digging the intro and drop, very powerful, really cool digitized synth sound but a shame some stuff seems slightly out of tune as well! Maybe overuse as well of the frikin brass sound! In the second half seems like there's a bit of lack of melody ideas until the nice riff of the digi-synth comes to the rescue. Nice one over all.

HAERDKOA
Very clever use of digitizers and filters on the intro and one of the best drops here! Nice harmony effects with the glissando and really cool wobbling effects on the synth. The fall to the break could be improved. In general very impressed with the all the sounds and moods, Nice seconds rhythm coming at 2/3rds of the song, it gives it so much more live! The End could have been smoothed out a bit as well but really cool tune in general. One of my fabs as well.

NO CIGAR
First 30 seconds are brilliant. Then it kind of goes in different directions and i get a bit lost but its got a good mood in general. Some sample fx are also a bit out there but. I would have explored the melody of the sort of accordeon sounding sound and gone a bit further with the reggae vibe. But very original.

BLAZING SUMMER
Brilliant start. A bit more accenting/velocity tweaking on the DnB percussion would prob make it a more powerful. Very nice arrangement. Bass sounds a bit too clean to be noticeable, maybe a detuned reese sound coul have filled a bit more the space but but nice use of samples here and there to create the mood and soundscape.

CONTOUR SINE
Cool intriguing intro but maybe still a bit too similar to the start at 0:40ish, so the start seems to miss a bit of the punch. The pads set a very nice mood and cool use of the crying synth sounds, very summery as well :)

WHEN SNAILS WHISPER
Intro seems a bit too long. Percussion maybe a bit to loud on the intro, specially that cymbal. Good mysterious dark mood on the main part of the tune and very interesting short chord progression. This high end of percussion is a bit too much, though. Sound is a bit over-saturated and too aggressive on the mid-high end for my test.

WHILE GOOD MEN SLEEP
Nice quite tune. Intro maybe lacks a bit more variety. Interesting "talking" bass, would maybe add some other frase on it, and maybe add some other base to allow for a kind of dialog.

AMORPHUS
Liking that aerial kind of 2stepy dub. The break in the middle its perhaps just a bit two long but the rests is very nice. Love what you did with the synths and the arpegiated notes towards the end, i would probably have explored that a bit more. The "ah shit" sample there seems a bit lost. Very good in general.

MORGAN POLTERGAIST
Nice ambient drone and spacey mood. The quiet drums fit very well with the mood. Some movement on the drone tone maybe would help specially towards the end.

DRAGON FLY
Cool IDM sort of drums at the start and throughout, and interesting melodies on the reverbed tones. The bass seems a bit shy slow on the long riff, maybe a bit of distortion get a bit more harmonics out of it could make it more interesting. The DNB is lacking a bit of energy i would say, maximize/compress the drums a bit , get the levels right and add some wooshing to get into it and it might sound a bit more aggressive.

DRINKING DIRTY WATER
Nice calmed intro with good melodies, feeling very IDM-like a bit like the previous. The bell sort of sounds are nice and the saturated synth feet well but the overall sound seems a bit over-compressed and muddy. Loving the melody and the arpeggios on the synths. Again, one of my fabs.

IKON
Good start, maybe feels a bit too loopy. I would add a bit of spice to it, feels a bit repetitive until around 1:30 where there are nice variations and the different synth voices create a nice mix of harmonies and sense of movement.

LUST
This one is harmonically complex, not out of tune like in some of my other comments, but in the good way, sounding a bit acidic if you want :) Nice feelings there. Maybe the snare sound is a bit overused, some velocity would probably help? I like the arrangement and timing of things.

YOCKSHIT
I like how the drop came about but still not convinced with the levels throughout the tune, at high volume the deep subbass sounds quite powerfull. Not sure about the ziping kind of taking think at 0:40 (and again at 2:00). The wobble sounds are not the best, totally agree with other's comments, could do with a bit more sound design on them.. actually a lot. There is something with the brass sample that could be fixed. Decent arrangement but could be improved, some of the breaks come in well some others maybe not so well. The overall sound could be improved, EQs here and there would probably fix some problems. Sounds a bit saturated as well...

BEST SHOT
Interesting intro, cool sound of the soft bass on it, and cool use of the speeding up loop, then the drop comes. Nice! Good powerful bass sound here! Would like to know how it was designed from the samples. I like the arpeggiated melody but when the same notes kind of reverse the melody im no t so conviced about it. Maybe the fraseing could be improved. In general sound very good could do with a few sweeteners here and there to add variety and colors, like the noise-wash-like sound towards the end. And the fade out.. mmm a bit unoriginal but all in all a very good tune! Also a fab.

Good quality in general!! Congrats to all that entered!! And thanks the others that have taken the time comment. Lets see what the rest of you guys think about the tunes :D

First of all I have to say I'm very impressed. Not a single bad tune here. I've narrowed it down to four favourites:

Long distance
What a start! The great percussive rhythm together with the top-notch production just makes it feel so natural. Every detail fits so well. I love the part around 2 minutes. Just great!

Hardkoa
Great build-up. Very tight production and has the best drop of them. Just love the percussions here as well. Someone said Nero-ish and I have to agree, which is a good thing. Personally I would go for a less cheesy melody, then it could be perfect. Anyway, I can't wait to find out who made this so I can hear his/her other stuff.

Contour sine
Great vibe and atmosphere. The background effects sits right where they should. Although there were many good relaxed piece in the competition this is my favourite one. It would be interesting to hear a version with a low and subtle wobbling bass beneath it.

Drinking dirty water
Not too keen on the beat/bass but the melodies, wow! I presume the producer has a background of making chip tunes. It sounds like the end credits to some old video game. Amazing and just gets better and better until the end.

Now when I'm listening to the list again I hear a couple of more tunes I really like so maybe I will have to widen the list. Just so many great ones in there!

All the criticism I got production-wise probably comes from the fact that I don't have proper monitors, only headphones... They're quality, but maybe it still sounds different on your end, fuller and whatnot. Either way, gotta work on my mastering skillz :e: Keep them reviews coming!

Agreed that there are no stinkers at all in this lot, just a few that could stand to distinguish themselves more...

OK, as promised (or threatened as the case may be) here's...

....Alphacat's Reviews.

:P: :e:

Couple quick things first:

~ When I say "funky" I'm not talking about the genre - I mean the adjective connoting booty-shakingness.

~ :u: What's with all the time limit overages, people... WTF?! Look, you can call me anal or anything you like, but if you're not gonna play by the rules why the fuck should we pay any attention to you? I was tempted to skip songs that went well over the 3 minute mark, but I'll just call attention to them. I mean, one or three seconds over happens with silence in the beginning or fade-outs - fine. But seriously, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE CONTEST RULES folks. Call attention to yourself with your tunes and not your cavalier disregard for the guidelines we've set up to level the playing field for all. I have yet to hear a tune in one of these whose amazing-ness warranted the run-over. Thank you for listening to my bullshit rant.

============================================================================================

'Long Distance' - Sounds good, clean, and well-mixed out of the box. Felt like a buildup to something else - a stronger theme perhaps - there's a deeper place that I want this to go to that never arrives. Keep this song and build it into something even better.

'Shoddy Shakedown' - (> 3:00 Image) - Liking your riddim, liking the bass weight, but there seems like a bit of a melodic disconnect between the atmo/lead stuff and the b-line. Sometimes atonality works; not sure it does here. Maybe give them more breathing room apart from each other with a stronger melodic hook of some sort, doesn't matter if it's the bass or the other stuff. Another one that could stand to be worked on further.

'Sample Riddim' - Interesting to see more garage-y vibes so far - usually there's a filthfacefucker tune in here by the third tune. ;) A little bit more balance in the frequency palatte (specifically mids - the bass & high end dominate the mix) could make this tune more accessible, as could more a more stripped-down approach in sections; emphasize the funk and turn down the static.

'Dispersion' - Not the most imaginative progression, but I like the subtle evolution and expansion of the drums. This song could benefit from a calculated sacrifice: swap out the stuff that doesn't need to be there and let the skillful restraint you show in your beatmaking also spill over into the other elements, particularly the synths - they don't always need to be there, and sometimes a heightened sense of space is better than the obligatory minor-key skank riff - think Swamp81.

'After Midnight' - Speaking of space, this has a nice sense of it from the word Go. This song makes me tense because it sounds like it could take me somewhere, but knowing that it's only 2:44, I'm worried I'm going to be taken part of the way and left there by the side of the road like a cheap whore. However, it's missing bass weight, like the b-line was last on the list and never made it. I'd have dropped that shit on us by about the minute mark - this tune would've been a real contender then.

'Footsteps' - (> 3:00 Image) Immediately establishes a bit of a creepy/eerie vibe, and it's not so much that vibe that I appreciate as the fact that it sets it up right away and doesn't fuck about. After that it's standard dubstep bidness, listenable and not bad, but could build on the vibe earlier and create more layers of it. Another one that needs a much earlier bass drop too.

'The Way You Are' - (> 3:00 Image) - Took too long in the build up especially considering you went over time limit (once more people, short time limit = show me what you got and stop writing like it's another one of your 8 minute tunes.) I do appreciate the restraint in the 'main' part starting around 2:00, nice thick ambience that's a little claustrophobic, tense. This one might also benefit from further refinement and development.

'Wet Desert' - Really appreciate that this one started with a fair degree of energy and didn't take 2 minutes to establish a vibe; the busy arpeggio could've waited longer, maybe after the bass drop, but at least the hypeness doesn't walk all over the song as it can in other "busy" tunes. This one could work on the dancefloor too I think.

'Hardkoa' - I like this tune a lot for being brave enough to wobble its heart out, yet in a fairly original way (major-key and catchy) - so far this may be the catchiest number of the lot [to me.] I like the re-iteration and variation on the melodic theme after the breakdown too, sort of a classic electronica feel without sounding dated, and the little embellishments, progression, and variations are very well done considering the short deadline. This one may also be the foremost submission in this round for sounding like a complete song despite the time limit. Well done.

'No Cigar' - Funky and quirky, which I always rate highly. I'd like to see the bassline developed more though; after a while it's not really holding my attention like the rest of the track elements. Make that bass as funky as the beats and you're on to something.

'Blazing Summer' - Alright, a stylistic departure! You're obviously experienced with DnB tunes too, nice economy (i.e. the progression is paced appropriately for the time limit) and while it's not the most unique DnB tune I've ever heard, it's pleasingly balanced, tuneful, and well laid out. Really curious to know who did this one; this song could fit in a mix very nicely. By the time it ends I want more.

'Contour Sine' - Even though the atmospheric samples have been used more or less as-is by most of the contestants, the way you're using them in the mix here is different somehow; I also appreciate the rhythmic originality, even if it's not crazy complicated or anything. That and the really evocative leadline (that somehow sounds like a weird steel guitar, love it!) takes this tune to a different place altogether than any of the others. Also want to hear more of your stuff.

'When Snails Whisper' - ...they say, "keep me away from the French!" :P Just kiddin'. Another one with a long build that could've been shortened, especially given how HUGE your drums are. That waveform is a straight brick starting around 1:10 and I can hear clipping in your bass. This can sometimes be used as an effect unto itself but I don't get that that's what your intention was. There's a conflict between the space suggested by the reverb on the drum mix and the lack of mix headroom; IMHO maybe favoring the latter is the way to go. I think you sound like an imaginative type whose production skills haven't quite caught up to the size of your imagination or ambition, but that's OK - at least you have those parts of the equation already. Keep it up.

'While Good Men Sleep' - If bass could talk, what would it say? "Ah-wo-woo...wooooow," that's what. There's something missing from this tune that I can't quite put my finger on: it's got decent elements, standard progression, kind of a melodically/rhythmically generic bassline... maybe that's what it is - where is this song trying to take me that 1000's of other "standard" dubstep tunes haven't already, and did you have a place in mind at all - or was this just a pastiche of stuff that just kind of happened while you were playing with the samples? Sometimes that approach works; in this case, while the song's not bad per se it just didn't set itself apart in terms of the ideas (but don't feel bad, because you're not alone there and I understand that a deadline sometimes can be prohibitive.) Try and set a goal for where the song's gonna go, even if it's a simple one-word idea. That is, of course, just my opinion.

'Amorphous' - (> 3:00 Image) - First one with an obvious vocal sample, interesting that so few people used 'em this time around. Otherwise... this song's fine but a little on the airy/fluffy side. Now, I'm not saying you have to threaten to sonically punch me in the face or put me on a spaceship bound for the most remote corner of the galaxy or even make me want to spontaneously get up and dance on my computer keyboard, but goddamit - make me want to do something.

'Morgan Poltergeist' - While I know that the track sequence is randomly assigned, it's unfortunate that so many people used the atmospheric sample pretty much straight-up; this is the first contest in a while where a sample has popped up in unadulterated form so much I think. ADULTERATE THAT SHIT, PEOPLE! That said - and trying to be objective considering that I've been listening to these for the better part of an hour now - this tune has a kind of stillness to it atmospherically that suggests cold light and hovering, with an interestingly developed sense of space in parts. Could almost be soundtrack music for something slightly weird without being ominous.

'Dragon Fly' - ...And right after I talk about people using the atmo sample without reinventing it, this tune goes ahead and does that. Nice sounds, the b-line is nice and musical and compliments the rest of the elements nicely, and the arrangement isn't cookie-cutter. The rinsed atmo starts to clash with the melodic stuff around 1:50 though, and I think a melodic variation at some point would've helped more than the beat change-up, but your beatcraft is solid nonetheless. Could be worth exploring further.

'Drinking Dirty Water' - Comes on a little wistful and demure, which I appreciate (sometimes speaking more quietly than everyone else in the room is a better way to get peoples' attention.) Then it's reinforced with interesting break usage and a fairly economic, song-centered progression - you started writing songs before you started listening to dubstep, no? I also like the sounds in this one a lot; for some reason the 8 bit arpeggio stuff works better in this tune than others. The ending is so abrupt it was like a splash of cold water in the face, because the foundation and progression here is so solid and well developed I wasn't paying attention to the time. If you can put together a tune like this, I think you could probably have made it work within the time limit without just yanking the plug at the end, but I understand too. Also curious if you're familiar with the work of Scientific American - your song's not derivative-sounding, but could be played in a set with his stuff and flow effortlessly, like his song "Simulated DIY."

'Ikon' - I'm curious as to which beat you came up with first, the one after the one minute mark or the opening one, because the opening riddim was more interesting to me. After the one minute mark it treads the same path as other tunes - the synth variation used around 2:20 could've been used more and earlier to vary it up. Good sounds that cry out for a more imaginative arrangement.

'Lust' - (> 3:00 Image) - Pretty good use of the sounds and a surprising kick of energy when the main riddim starts that I didn't expect (I like to be surprised, in case you couldn't tell.) Interesting development of the sub-themes here, if not the most smoothly flowing progression thereof. I think you probably come up with a lot of ideas in a short amount of time but sometimes have problems with attention span too - I guess this because I'm the same way. This one metaphorically ran in medium-sized circles with interesting (if undisciplined) strides; perhaps you might aim for a musical destination that's not a closed loop, but a well-thought out meandering into parts unknown instead... if that makes any sense at all.

'Yockshit' - Something told me right away that you were about to sick a pit bull of a bassline on me - which is why I was so surprised when the beat dropped into that crazy busy insect skittle! Nice. In fact, the bass is the only thing in this mix which really didn't grab and hold my attention... everything else is really engaging to me. You even manage to pull off a little sense of space in such a hectic mix which is a tough thing to do. That said - since the bass is so unremarkable compared to the rest of the elements, and since space is always a good thing to develop, if I were you I'd work to make the bass do both somehow - two birds with one stone and all that. Top notch beats though.

'Best Shot' - This is why it's so hard to critique these things sometimes, because despite all this importance I put on originality and not sounding like everybody else, this song's elements aren't anything we haven't heard before - and yet it fucking works, and I'm not 100% sure why. Them snares roll it along at a huff-puff pace, and the bassline is all glossy rubber; the progression's not pushing any style boundaries but it's still satisfying to listen to. It has more of that intangible something that I just can't nail down, but had to listen to more than once. Probably not a lot of help eh? :?

I think we should go for a system where we give points for our top 3 or something. I had a really hard time deciding (although I've voted now :W: ) and I think many other people have as well making them not vote at all instead.

Hmm I think I'll enter the next one of these. Hopefully win so I can give everyone just a bunch of random home-made vocal samples and force people to cut out single cycles and synthesize everything from scratch :D
Just getting through the last of these tracks, will be voting soon.

After midnight sounds like it has some deep bass but it's not loud enough. In fact everything but the hats are too quiet, can't really turn it up loud because the hats will shred your ears. Would really like to hear another mixdown of this.

In contrast, Dispersion looks like it's motherfuck limited but it's really just loud constant sub. First time I saw the waveform load I was like "oh shit volume knob, quick before your ears get exploded" Ends up being a nice mix though.

The Way You Are kinda has the same problem as After Midnight, sub's too quiet. Those triplet filtered noise notes tripped me out at first, I thought someone was knocking on my door.

Also enjoyed Amorphus, I'm a sucker for a minor 6-1 progression. Wish it was longer but alas, rules.

Those were my top 5 interesting tracks along with Long Distance which got my vote from production and sound design alone. I don't even know what samples were given but this track made use of them well and beat out other tracks that might have won if they had better production and mixing.

Anyways bigup to everyone in the comp! Can't wait to school you all on the next one  :d:

In regards to the tune battle thing, keep in mind that that was just two tracks. People are much more willing to spend a few minutes vs the hour or more required to judge all these tracks.

Wow,this was wayyyyy to hard to chose but in the end I narrowed it down to 5:
5-Long Distance
4-Hardkoa
3-Drinkin Dirty Water(that high ptiched synth near the end wow :D )
2-Best Shot
and my final choice with almost tie with the second place:
Dispersion!!
Bigs ups man really like the vibe of the tune and the presence of the sub when it drops :!:

next time there should be a limit of people who enter the comp.....like 5/8 or something

that way people can choose better and give more feedback
