guilty pleasure of the day - jersey shore. i guess there is some enjoyment or entertainment in watching stereotypes and stupid people at some base level, even if it is scripted.

also twisted individual - unreleased works vol 3 dropped :t:

I like Nas. I like his political edge, and the fact that someone who raps about Black struggle can be so famous and relatively mainstream is impressive. That said, I do not like the album cover. Despite the fact that I'm white, I'm pretty appalled that he would compare his own struggles in America to the horrors of slavery (it is so similar to the famous photograph of a slave's back, covered in thick bull whip scars--and Nas is certainly knowledgeable of Black history enough-- that is cannot be a mistake). I realize that Blacks are still oppressed in America, and perhaps he was making a connection to wage slavery (which does not effect only African Americans), but still. Even Dead Prez wouldn't pull something like that.

Also, the song Fried Chicken could be quite politically charged, given the stereotype. Perhaps he gets into the idea of racial assumptions/expectations and feeling that he is caught in a paradox--living up to these racist ideas by actually enjoying fried chicken, and feeling that this preference relegates him into Sambo territory. It syncs well, I think, with the sweet potato chapter juxatosed agains the grit incident in Invisible Man (earlier in he novel, when the white clerk tells him that the special is porkchops with grits, and insinuating that the Narrator would be excited it about it, because of his color--while he likes pork chops he is so enraged hat he orders something "white"--coffee with toast--and is even more livid after a white patron orders them (anger, perhaps, that the white fellow is able to order whatever he wants because he doesnt have to worry about stereotypes), with the sweet potatoes, later on, he feels a sense of freedom--he ordered what he wanted because he no longer cared about if he was living up to expectations). It could also, I suppose, be a commentary on how these cultural staples have led to African Americans having extremely high rates of heart disease etc., but I would like to think that Nas is a little more complex than a PSA.

Sorry for the super ling, self-indulgent post. I'm currently taking a seminar class on Ralph Ellison, and have taken a few classes in the past concerning African American culture from the colonization of Africa to the present.
