HiMi: great intro.. the bassline is good.. My only opinion would be to add something going on in the background. great work

Olux: catchy! I like it.. sounds a little too dry tho.. for me anyway.. but nice start!!

7thSun: nice work.. nothing bad stood out to me!

Gkmusic: I say do something with the vocal samples.. maybe switch them up with effects every now-and-then.. but other than that.. nice track!

this is a rough idea i laid down.. i have a friend working on vocals.. I'm just looking for ANY feedback! Thanks!!

@victoryaloy - Really nice crunchy snare sound, better than most I've heard. Was it doubled up with a clap? Really nice progression throughout. Maybe at the last drop you could bring in some subtle pads to just make it a bit more dramatic and different to the other drops. Some delay on the drums after the last drop would sound really cool too. You could resample and reverse them to add a bit of variation too. Really good start dude :)

Another song in a day, second to last. Let me know what you think.

@tripwire: pads are sick! and that snare is beautttiful. although i feel like it's almost too intense for the chill vibe that's going on. not sure if it's just me though...

@HiMi: dope, dope, dope! i'm loving the wobble and sub in this. i think some might think it's too much, but i'm digging it. drops are tight.

@loud flavor: i dig the wobble and all the pauses with different sounds!

@olux: whoa, groovy little arcade-style tune you got going there! i love that little vibrato effect in there, keep goin with it

@7thSun: soundin good for your second track! i know you said it needs some mixing so i won't really hound on that, but it sounds really thin. i felt like a drop or something huge was coming but it never did.

@gkmusic: fuckin right i see the potential! you've got something brewin here and i like it. chilltastic!

@deadlyhabit: i think i gotta take a shower after this one. dirty dirty! i'm a big fan of the creepy stuff going on in the background, i gotta figure out how to make stuff like that.

@victoryaloy: sounds good man, can definitely picture some vocals on top of that. the almost-silent drop is sick!

@jakedubber: sounds like you're heading in the right direction, but something seems a little off. might be your drums? i think they might sound too realistic maybe? maybe they're just not fully mixed yet.

Here's my newest project, my fourth attempt at producing anything. It's still pretty rough, but hopefully I can get some feedback/tips for improvements.

Self crit: I feel like it feels kind of "empty." I haven't messed with the pads in Ableton, but I think I might try that to kind of fill it in. Still have to work on the intro and outro some, somethings not sounding right in those. I think it kind of just needs to be blended together more, although I suppose most works in progress do. And I don't know shit about mastering/eq'ing so it may not sound too hot.

Be harsh, I'd love ANY feedback so I know if I'm heading in the right direction or not. I appreciate it guys!

@willryan :D lol I'll try not to be harsh muahahah haha jk
I like some of the sounds you got in there, although I think you should shorten the length of the notes and try to scrunch the song together if you know what I mean, because to my ear it kinda seems like some of the wobbles are held a little too long.
Also, I think your wobble needs to cover more of a low/mid/ a lil high. basically I'd like to hear this a little deeper :e:
I'd go in a different direction for the drop though! and maybe chop it up a little and have the occasional stop to hear pure snare? :D but at 1:10 i'd lower the volume on the snare just a tad bit cuz it kinda overpowers everything by far

cool remix though! totally different direction from what i did last year when I was just starting out :e:

thanks for the meaty post ogunslinger!

i agree, i've been trying to kind of "thicken" up the wobble and make it sound deeper, but i haven't had much luck. i'll try pushin some stuff down an octave or so and seeing what happens.

hahahah and i think what you're talking about at 1:10 is a sample i have of an explosion. it's been my cheap/easy way out for the big punch at the beginning of a drop, until i learn something more useful. i'll try mixing it in a bit better.

thanks for the feedback.. The snare has 3 layers: an acoustic sample, a crisp sample, and a clap.. each treated w/ different verb.. then sent to the same verb.. no compression besides the compressor on the master channel!

I listened to your track threw my laptop speakers so I can't say much now.. but I'll have a listen threw my cans later and edit this post and let you know what i think! :D:

Edit: Had a listen.. sounded good.. try messing around with some reverb!

I don't know if you use ableton but what I do is duplicate the synth + throw on an eq 8 and boost the low's and drop the mid's and boost the hi's, Usually I run like 3 or 4 of the same synth's and separate them into low/mid/high so it's easier :e:

haha it works though!

Ahhhh that makes sense. I've just been duplicating my synths and then putting the duplicates at lower frequencies. it gives it a little bit of a punch but your way sounds better. i guess it's about time i dip my fingers into a little eq'ing ;)

Thanks @HiMi and @willryan042 for the quick feedback. I definitely need to do more work on it. I'm down in London at the moment looking after my cousins, so I've just got my laptop and some old dying headphones. Will post an updated track in a few days when I'm back home.

Robot skank :)

Loving the sound of it - perhaps try a bit of double time? Charging breakdown in the middle, then back to the skanking pace?

Here is a new one I have been working on, very different and a bit of use of breaks:
Thinking I might toy around with the bass a bit, but any advice/feedback on here is helpful ;)

@mattlock
Solid dude, really digg that melody a bit jealous of it, sick break. Every seems fine as it is tbh, maybe you could cut from the lushness and break out some dirty drop.

@dougriley
Very dark, awesome intro. Kinda loses itself though, maybe change the pitch or tone down some of the stabs.

@willryan042
Not a fan, the song has been overdone, but you should take what you have done and make your own song.

@victoryaloy
The synth is good and catchy, the drop is good maybe you can add to it, like you said vocals. It seems a little naked maybe add some pads or ambience. This has real potiential keep working at it. Would like to hear finished product.

@deadly habit
Solid effort, really like the percussion has really good song structure. Like the sound of bassline but gets a little lost and boring maybe you could slow and speed it up. Maybe a few more dark stabs/samples.

@project ex
Like the live type feel drums. Good approach. Not digging the first part of the sample, but like it before the drop. Still needs a little more work to make it more appealing. Good effort though

Still working on this, not really good at song structure as you can tell. Need to add percussion. Shaved off some frequencies from the pad. Working out how to modulate a parameter in NN-XT. And needs a catchy melody.

Man, I said it before, but I really love that Pad...
Starts to break up and distort on my speakers though, so I'd make another large-ish cut at somewhere around 400hz. Sweep that general area and find out where the big resonant rumble's coming from
imo, it dosn't need a melody as such. maybe a few sparse blips and beeps, but I reckon it works much better as a drone track- really sucks you in

"Kirin Glass" Rough Mix

Post by Anain » Mon Aug 09, 2010 6:14 pm

I think this track is getting close, but it feels like it needs to be tightened up in some spots. It's not mixed yet, so I'm looking for more comments on the arrangement and feel of the track. Please be harshly critical :x Thanks.

this tune is gonna be nice but it seams liek the bass wobbles are missing a layer or two
and also the same could be said for the snare the white noise over powers your snare

liking the use of the vocal and the way this tune builds sounds like the bass is a bit over compressed i definitely want a copy if you decide to sort them out when its finished
