they're not very expensive compared to most music equipment ;)

a condenser mike is about £100 + power supply which u dont need for drums

and for a decent shure about £50 for a pg45 maybe £80 if you get a sm58 (industry standard)

Ah, good timing with this
:D
I'm working on a track right now; just put out a cigarrete in an empty bottle and the "t'sssss" which happened to fall in as the last quarter of a bar and to be blunt, it sounded sweet as. What kind of mic would be best to pick up such incidental sounds?

definately a condenser for this, theyre more sensitive than dynamic mics. maybe an akg c1000, they're used a lot for recording hi-hats because of the nice sparkly top end they have, which i reckon would be handy for this particular sound. :)

It really does amaze me that people don't think about this...

Off the top of my head, for any newbies a good tip when searching is to add keywords eg

Snare hits blogspot
Snare hits RAR / mediafire
...And you could do a lot worse than googling a certain "1600 snares" pack
Just use your common sense; There is infinate amount of samples on the net... you just gotta second guess the right combination of keywords to track them down.

http://www.freesound.org is always a good shout, although you aren't guaranteed great quality (performance and recording wise).

Wasteman. If you can't use google *or* forums then how do you expect to master a DAW?

I'm not convinced that even with the people actually giving him links he will be able to get the samples from the internet to his computer.
I USED GOOGLE to find this forum, and I'M USING THIS FORUM perfectly well. Quite clearly I'm able to get samples on my computer to know their not too good. So shut the fuck up! Jesus people are annoying.

I've found plenty of drum hits but my point was to find good quality ones.

I think untold in an interview said that there isn't some bank of amazing samples you get access to when you're signed. Good samples is one thing, but knowing how to use them another.
