"R" for Raw

Post by naroja » Wed Aug 25, 2010 12:46 am

Hey Guys, so I could've posted this in the "Help me make this sound" thread, but I think this gets a bit deeper and more theoretical than the normal stuff... I'm wondering how to produce this certain vocal sound. Recently i've been messing around with some patches, getting some really nice vocally AEIOU vowel formant type basses, and this has been all good, but I've been wanting to create this one particular sound for a while now. :u:

I want to create an R sound at the beginning of my leads. (R like "Raw" "Roe" "Rue")

Talked to a few people about this, some people say the low cutoff sounds enough like an "R", but I'm looking for something a bit more clear than that.

Maybe it would be easier just to record some vocals, and throw them in a sampler, distort them, add a bunch of filters, saturation, eqing etc etc., but I was wondering if I could do this synthetically. If anyone has any ideas, anything that could help me create this new sound would be appreciated. :D

Thanks!
- Naroja

P.S. (Not sure if this is possible, but if anyone has any charts on eq'ing for synthetic vocals that aren't the normal vowels, that would be awesome) :D

Also keep in mind that "r" is a pitched consonant, all those familiar with phoenetics will know. This is why your finding that the cutoff alone gives you a nice response, but for clarity you need to break it down into it's elements. Just say "r" slowly and you'll know what I mean.

Basic A: Aha! You're Awesome man, I guess I didn't look hard enough on the forum for the "R's" - I'm trying to get something more like real vocals of R, but definitely on the end half have that sorta "Datsikision" type grymemonster comin' out... I'm definitely going to check out your packs and play with them. I'lll have something to show in a bit. Thanks!

Siderealdb: Cool, yeah - I've been saying "r" slowly all day haha

I'm guessing it can be done since the Subtractor in Reason has a preset where they made the synth sound like it says "electronic". I couldent tell you how to do it, but if you use Reason you probably could isolate that r in electronic.
Is simply sampling a pirate or something out of the question?

Be sure to tweak the fuck out of everything, Ive deliberately saved these presets to have alot of simple lessons in them. look at the formants, note where I tell you to put the downsampling, check out how everythings routed, and the waveforms n whatnot. Tweak em. Best of luck. Really more a begginners guide to brostep synthesis then anything I guess.

Also remember that theres a big chance that 99% of whats making the bass patches in the tunes your listening to sound so immense, cinematic, ect. is that they are layered with massive amounts of cinematic samples, white noise sweeps, glitches, and ect. The audience getting that sense of massiveness is USUALLY more about what you subtley place under the bass patches then the patches themselves. Easiest way to make a transformer bass? Layer a bass with a transformer.

 ... And I typed this with Mud on.

ninjadog, paravrais: Awesome, Thanks, I'll check them out, should help out a lot.

Basic A: Yeah, I've got no problem making the massive / immense sounds, I've just never heard what I'm going for before (as far as Synths go)... I really want to get that "R" Vibe into the track... Definitely going to keep playing with it until I get it. I'm really liking this Antlantis Filter / VSTi you put in the bundle so far, really nice stuff.

Load the waveform/chip/w/e you call it, I included up into atlantis, drop the octave slider till you hit bass regions, turn the width until it gets real bassey, fuck with the phase to suit your taste. Load the distortion 1 unit as the first effect in atlantis, then formant morph 2 as the second. Turn the resonance on the formant morph to about 50% and then scroll through the filter freuency until you start to hear the rrrr... fine tune the frequency a bit more, and adjust the resonance, then go back to your distortion and turn it up or down to suit. assign lfo one with a VERY subtle range and slow speed on the lfo to the formant frequency. put oone of the envelopes with a medium ish attack on the distortion amount, once gain, being subtle with the range. finally insert one of the harmonic lowpasses as your 3rd effect, and assign lfo2 to its cutoff.

also notable : try assigning lfo2 to a few more things within the synth then just the lowpass, consider the phase on the oscillators and the formant resonance. itll help make it sound a little more cohesive then just an lfoing lowpass over a nutsoid rrr vocal.

after youve done all that, bus/insert in some more downsampling and subtle overdrives on your mixer.

filter everything off below about 150htz...

layer with sine.

basically should yeild you either nuke em by datsik or invaders by datsik  . depends on where you put the formant freuency and what you assign to lfo.

Its still gonna sound properly bland without being layered with some robot samples(berklee) though. and layering pisses me off. :u: so your on your own there.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I have a couple of patches I've made with the sound you are looking for... An alternative is to automate the shift downward when you have the preffered sound, also works with tweaking.

Thanks Mate, Still need to try this out once I get on my system, but sounds good. I love Berklee :D

Also going to try and get a hold of Reason soon so I can break down the "THOR" patch and try to extract what's really making that sound.

Listened to it... Really shitty "R" Sound... Just a cutoff basically

If I figure out a good formula for this, I'm going to have to post a tutorial & produce a few good tracks.

Heh... sorry bout that.. was a bit drunk the other night...

The "I am Thor" Patch... Sounded like the R was just a cuttoff, wasn't too pronounced or resonant.

This thread is starting to go downhill, but hopefully after some tests I can report back with some good results for the sound....
Its hard to guess what I'm thinking of, I should be posting some more examples... I'll get on that soon....
