Focus on keeping everything sparse and grooving with each other. Atmosphere is a must. Dont use in your face distortion, warmth and some drive here n there, stick mostly to subs. Throw some half bar or even whole bar rests in there... delays and shit...
IDK man its all about the sound selection. Ask yourself, what vibe do I wanna set? and then set it.

Re: wat makes it deep?
to me depth generally suggests detail and subtlety. little bits that you might not notice at first, but keep things interesting on repeat listens.

Re: wat makes it deep?
I think it's music that has enough space in it to let the listener fill in some gaps for themselves. You don't need and in-your-face melody all the time, or drums that absolutely slam. As Basic said I think groove is important, but being able to let the listener work it out, music that suggests things instead of blasting it out really explicitly. Listening to dub (old reggae dub I mean here) is a really good starting point. I don't mean you have to have the guitar skank and all, just listen to the use of space, the little bits of instrument here and there, the result ends up being much much greater than the sum of the parts.

Re: wat makes it deep?
I wish someone had outlined this for me ages ago but I've only just recently figured out that to get that deep sound it's really all about sparse and short melodies.Basic A wrote:Loefah himself, and my favorite quote of all time.

Re: wat makes it deep?
Space, atmosphere, reverbs, delays, melodies, sparse rythm's, pads, sub bass, minimal vibes, meditational vibes
Also read the Q&A with Cyrus, some good tips in there.

Also dont make the drum hits too aggressive. No huge white noise snares and Vengence kicks. Keep the drums organic.Basic A wrote:

Would you care to elaborate on this? Not sure what you mean by gated noise snares...alex_l wrote:although gated noise snares and filtered kicks can have their place if used right.JFK wrote:Also dont make the drum hits too aggressive. Basic, Claude Debussy beat Loefah to that quote (or the jist of it rather) by 100 years or soBasic A wrote:Loefah himself, and my favorite quote of all time.

Re: wat makes it deep?
Sure; to my mind, the big white noise snares have much too long a tail to be of any use in any deeper music, but if you gate them, or just chop the sample very short, pretty much keeping only the attack, you can use all that high frequency content to good effect in a similar way to using rimshots etc to feed reverbs to get nice, 'swimmy' sounds.amphibian wrote:Would you care to elaborate on this? I like the sound of artificially truncating samples with a gate or in the sampler; it can lead to interesting glitchy noises, and because they are short they still leave room for the music to breathe. Of course they should be lower in the mix than big brostep snares usually are.

Re: wat makes it deep?
For a long time I found it hard to properly analyse deeper tracks. Much harder to figure out what was going on than with heavy stuff because it's a combination of so many subtle influences at once that create the vibe.amphibian wrote:A self-driven analysis of any great track would have told you as muchparavrais wrote:I wish someone had outlined this for me ages ago but I've only just recently figured out that to get that deep sound it's really all about sparse and short melodies.Basic A wrote:Loefah himself, and my favorite quote of all time.

Re: wat makes it deep?
another key element imo is making people hear things that aren't there, but that's kinda hard to explain. kind of one of those things i learned from producing and listening to loads of ambient
