Breakdowns, do we NEED to have them?

Post by Dacks » Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:06 am

I finished the tune in my sig off not long ago and sent it around to some people, i got a lot of good feedback however one piece of advice that stood out to me was that I needed to put in a break down and take the bass out in the middle somewhere. my idea of a break down in the track was where I took out the main wobbley synth but kept the sub.

so tell me what's your view? are breakdowns 100 percent necessary in dubstep today? do we have to completely cut out bass to let the ravers know that there is a breakdown?

would be good to hear what other producers think on this subject!

peace.

i completely agree to these replys, i personally dont think there should be any "rules" to production, especially if the tune can still slam the ground when it gets played.

Agree with everyone else however I just wanna add that you have a pretty basic and warped idea of a breakdown, it can be literally anything that changes the pace / general idea of the song. It can be just the bass dropping out but you can do so much more with it and it really helps keep a song interesting.

Dubstep bylaw 814-27 does state that that a breakdown must occur between 2:20 and 2:35 (except on a sunday) but AFAIK this only applies in Missouri.

For me, because of my mixing style, I do hammer it tune after tune, but then i Love to also mix intro's with mid-breaks to give it some space and impact for the next one. I will do this 1/4 tracks i mix in. Definately make a bigger impact.

Do it if you want to, its the norm for most tracks to be set in this way to be able to mix easily. Ie it has a visible and audible point of reference to ware you should start mixing in the next track etc...
Just my opinion.

Now you know what we're gonna say already. :?

If its worth playing we the djs will make it work.

And for some peoples opinions, the odder the structure, the more fun to mix.

I quite often go for break ups rather than break downs, the latest work in progress has quite a nice break up.

As long has it has some sort of dynamic energy. If it's at 100% all the time that 100 starts to sound like 50%.

two drops has been a tired arrangement forever, people like Dillinja have been playing that card weekly since the mid 90s, any chance you get to make a tune outside of that format should be jumped upon.

keep in mind that the dj also can just cut out the bass of your tune so its not like they always need an "easy-mode" transition set up for them
