Ripping Vinyl which you buy to go onto your iPod?

Was just wondering if this was 1, legal and 2, morally wrong? Me and a friend went to a lengthy discussion about it over a couple of pints the other night (as you do) and came to the conclusion that there are reasons for and against doing it.

For
iTunes and pretty much most media players available for PC/Mac have the option of importing a CD to mp3 files. Which we argued could be seen as the same as vinyl to mp3.

Against
If the release is available to buy as an mp3/flac etc download then is it wrong to rip it so that you effectively have a full length full quality version for free?

From a moral stand point, if the record is vinyl only is it right to get an mp3 version of it?

I am not that clued up on my copyright laws etc and only know the basics so to speak. Also this is not me trying to start arguments or condone anything that is illegal. I’m just curious as to what the laws and moral laws say on this matter as i was intrigued by an article i read that said burning a copy of a cd you own to play in the car is technically illegal (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/bargains-a ... _page_id=5).

i don't see how you'd be getting an mp3 for free anyway assuming you'd bought the vinyl in order to be able to rip it, or are you talking about ripping someone else's vinyl?

Just download the 320 mp3 digital from any pirate website.
You have bought it, why should you buy it again?

what.cd is the online backup for all my vinyl
strict rules about encoding / formats etc and pretty much every record you own is on there
why waste time doing it urself

Nothign wrong with ripping vinyl at all. Like has been said...it's yours..do what you wanna do with it. I even then put rips onto CD so I can listen to it in my car....As long as your rips aren't being shared it's all good.

Thanks for the replies guys The only vinyl i tend to rip is the ones that are vinyl only releases. For instance, got Zomby - Rumours & Revolutions in the post this morning and ripped it for the iPod.

Maybe it's technically illeagal, but after shelling out the money for the physical thing I don't feel bad about it at all.

If you think about it when you buy music, some of the money goes into the actual manufacturing of the physical medium it comes on, some goes to paying for the music itself (in the more abstract sense). When you download, you are only getting that second half - which I think you have already paid for when you bought the physical thing.

In terms of practicality, I started ripping all my vinyl, but it just takes too long for me and is tedious, so I have a huge backlog. I might just start downloading it on pirate websites instead. I'll check out that what.cd

Im pretty sure its tottaly legal to download any digital content if you allready have purchased and own the product and have a recepit.

So if you buy a game you can download it again via torrent whatever as you allready own a licence to the software.

Don't know about legal, but I don't see how it could be morally wrong.

If you've paid for the vinyl, there's no issue transferring the music to your iPod as you would with a CD. The problem comes if you were to distribute the mp3 you made, that's morally wrong.

the smart labels are doing this already, buy it on vinyl or cd and get a voucher card or code included in the package or via email to download the release in high quality digital format.
hell it's nice especially with pre-orders to get the digital copy the day of release while you wait for the physical product in the mail as well.

i was doing this for awhile, but found it really f'in tedious, just found dl'ding it from p2p much easier and quicker with typically the same sound quality.

Slippery slope really.

Downloading it is still illegal in some places even if you own it, the "backup laws" say you can make a backup from your own physical medium, not download it. We had a really interesting discussion on exactly this subject last year in the SNH if you want to search.

I don't really see a problem, can't expect someone to buy the same tune in 4 different formats especially if they already dropped quite a bit on the vinyl. Downloading from torrents is probably not a good idea though as you upload to other people even as you download, most likely people who didn't buy it. It's not that hard to rip it to digital yourself though, only takes as long as the tune is. Doing it with an entire collection is a different story, but I think I would want consistent quality and levels throughout, which really means DIY.

There's still court battles going on concerning this subject, and I'm sure laws will be changed or amended, so in my opinion it's really a moral issue.

And yes it really is a slippery slope... for example my parents gave me a bunch of their old vinyl for me to have, would it be ok for me to torrent all them for example?
