We're so divided....

Post by Grime Syndicate » Wed Sep 08, 2010 6:56 am

Agressive, Jump-up, so-called Brostep is attracting the masses. It's so apparent its not funny. The noobs want to sound like Excision and Datsik. Great. God bless em. Not my favorite producers but not my least either. I listen to everything. If it can be called Dubstep by the most lax of definitions, I'm listening. I happen to enjoy both sides of the argument. Deep dubstep is what brought me in, jump-up's piqued my long-term interest. WHO FUCKING CARES if you like one or the other? I know I don't. Where I'm living, I hear neither locally. Got to travel some, which is fine. It reminds me that we're two sides to a community which is linked in the eyes of most. Inextricably so. But to those deepest in the community, there's a chasm which exists between "intelligent dubstep" and the rest. This is a farse which drives us against ourselves. More posts in this forum are regarding wobbles (and folks' dislike of said wobbles), Movie quotes(and folks' disdain of such), etc etc etc ad infinitum. No one cares. I'll rephrase that. I don't care. I make music. I live in the epi-center of Mormonism, conformity, conservatism and the American fuckin dream. To find like-minded heads is difficult to say the least. They're out there, but few and far between. More concerned with this week's episode of America's Got Talent than what they've done today to contribute to the world. So what, right? So this. The tension between the two factions seems to impede the flow of information more than any other factor (in my eyes). We are all producers making our way. Some of us are more inclined toward the elctronic, digitized, aggressive, metal influenced side of Dubstep. Others find their home in the spaced out, irregular, sub oriented, reggae influenced, deep Dubstep. Beautiful. I couldn't be happier that there's a diversity in Dubstep which is hard to find in other genre's. I'd be hard pressed to find other genres which embody so many different sounds and vibes, yet live under the same moniker. It may be my surroundings, but it seems to me that Dubstep producers of any variety are to be cherished and watched. It may be their sound that blows up tomorrow. This is still an amorphous and fluid structure. Ready to be shaken and tossed about by the next and most popular incarnation. The roots aren't so deep that such isn't possible.

If you're just gonna talk shit, don't bother posting. I'm vibrating on a frequency that's not interested in the petty infighting. I wanna know where the heads are at that wanna work on collaborations. Where's the cat that wants to take over the world, that's who I'm ingterested in. Fuck the fussing and the fighting. We are here for one purpose. Recognize that, please.

You know what I meant. I don't care about your civil war. I hunger for information and groove. Nothing more.

I'm gonna say I have to agree to an extent. There does seem to be a general frowning upon jump up/brostep etc, but I'm just as happy listening to Breakage, Scuba, Ramadanman, Phaeleh etc as I am Datsik, Nero, Reso, 16 Bit and Jakes, and everything in between. Exactly the same as I listen to a lot of downtempo, broken beat, classical, breaks, drum n bass, rock and electronica.

Diversity is a good thing, whether within a particular genre or music in general. A good tune is a good tune just as a shit one is a shit one, and it doesn't matter what pigeonhole it falls into. Personally when DJ-ing I prefer heavier tunes, I guess that comes from my drum n bass background and my fairly aggressive DJ-ing style, but production always leans towards more chilled beats.

I guess the moral of the story is, don't hate on a particular style purely for what it is labelled as, if you are going to hate, hate on a track for being shite.

Just like you will always find at least one sample you can use on any CD you pick up, chances are you will find at least one track you like in every genre or sub-genre.

The amazing thing about what is becoming this huge, over-arching umbrella known as dubstep is just that - it's fucking huge! Within the same genre (and sure, soon to be a huge splinter of subgenres (it's already started)), you can get deep bass-heavy dub-like tracks, relaxing melodies, massive earth-shaking danceflloor anthems (which I personally love when I'm out and ready to party!), and the more idm-influenced stuff like techstep, or tech dub.etc.

I agree with you whole hearted Grime - especially this comment of yours:
The tension between the two factions seems to impede the flow of information more than any other factor (in my eyes)
I'm noticing this quite a bit recently, and I think it's fairly bad. However, there are some instances that frustrate everyone who has actually put the time in to learn something new, when someone comes along and blatantly ignores search.

I think my key annoyance is people saying things like "make your own sound, forget that one!" - when they blatantly disregard the possibility that people learn rather well that way.

I wouldn't say we're divided as such - because we're all here for a love of one thing - production, we, just like all forums - have a very wide range of demographics and obviously everyone thinks differently.

i like good music and buy, listen and dj it. the bitching on forums, facebook etc has incredibly little impact on the "scene" seeing as a good chunk of the punters could give a fuck less about this site or what "true dubsteppers" have to say. think of it like this, people who subscribe to the idea that you can only like one style, or that it's the only "true" form to a music are like people who subscribe to the notion or belief that one political party has all the right answers for all problems that arise. it's just retarded.
at the same time don't put glitter on a wheel and say you reinvented it, genres and sounds evolve all the time and just because you don't like something doesn't mean it needs a new tag, or like i said that you invented a new genre especially seeing that the original aesthetic for dubstep was very open (unless it's something we[.i] don't like)
haters gonna hate etc, but at the end of the day it's all subjective.
just don't put powdered sugar on a piece of dog shit and try to convince me it's a delicious brownie

hey guys, anyone tried replacing every "dubstep" in this thread with "drum n bass" and pretending it's 3 years old?

...and that's the real issue with dubstep nowadays

the best dubstep is that which is neither brostep nor deep, but blends elements of both and more, and which pushes boundaries of existing edm.

What I hate is how now in the dubs/wips section you've got "new deep/chilled vibes, eyes down" bla bla loads of pretentious bollocks, instead of "CHECK MY DUTTY FREE20!!1" which was far easier to avoid.

It's like the same people are now making the same wastegash tunes and then taking the wobble (the only notable thing in the track) out and calling it deep/progressive/experimental.

I've got issues, I know.

i figure if you boil it all down it's that people spend too much time complaining and not enough time listening

why there should ever be some sort of tension between genres of music just strikes me as The Most Retarded Thing

...The flip side to this is that you get those people who say "Oh, I'll listen to any type of music...". (not to be confused with people who have a broad taste, mind)
You got to wonder WHY they actually listen and what they're getting from it, and maybe they're not experiencing the "lurch in your gut" moment; That surge in adrenaline when good music hits...

So in that respect, it could be an awful lot worse. We're united in a passion for wanting to provoke reaction in people (which surely must outweigh bickering about deep Vs filth)

Awesome post mate.

To be honest I cannot stand 90% of the brostep stuff. I think it's unmusical abrupt noise.

But I don't feel the need to tune people for listening to or trying to make it or respond to threads and flame people just because of there taste in music. If we could all just learn to acknowledge each others differences and get on with making music this forum/world would be a much better place. :w:

Just my two cents

Old George Orwell got it backward. Big Brother isn't watching. He's singing and dancing. He's pulling rabbits out of a hat. Big Brother's busy holding your attention every moment you're awake. He's making sure you're always distracted. He's making sure you're fully absorbed. He's making sure your imagination withers. Until it's as useful as your appendix. He's making sure your attention is always filled. And this being fed, it's worse than being watched. With the world always filling you, no one has to worry about what's in your mind. With everyone's imagination atrophied, no one will ever be a threat to the world."

we were having this conversation on the bannana board 10 years ago. Bad Company have killed Drum n Bass, wahh wahh, I think I was one of the people crying tbh. That was back when you could still say 'compared to Dillinja this plastic techno shit is bollocks'. Then Bad Company set up DOA, now its all about sitting on DOA saying Dillinja is shit while searching for D Bridge sets.

If people didn't keep missing the point and making music true heads thought was childish shit we would never have moved from jazz, funk and dub through electro, disco, hip hop, house/garage, techno, hardcore, jungle, drum n bass, dubstep etc. Thats evolution in art, its rapes and pillages as it goes, bastard childeren everywhere. You can't care that some idiot kid down the road is listening to shit music made by another idiot kid, just because it's the same speed as the music you listen to. It doesn't damagae who you are or the good music you like. There's better things to lose sleep over than the fact the rest of world doesn't share your exact taste in art.

Mozart v. Salieri
Igor Stravinsky v. Sergey Prokofiev
Joseph Haydn v. Beethoven
Wynton Marsalis vs. Miles Davis
East Coast v. West Coast(biggie, tupac)
Rolling Stones v. The Beatles

This is just a short list of artistic contemporaries that I believe benefited in most ways from their divisions. Each had their own camp of followers, and though many may have died as a result, I believe that it's within these feuds that music was able to evolve. Would Mozart have written his requiem if he hadn't been poisoned, and rushed by Saleri? Would Beethoven have been as great, and rebelious, without Haydns over controlling mentoring? These are the things that push emotion and innovation IMO. It's not as if this phenomenom is exclusive to dubstep either. I'm sure that the man who shaped the first wheel out of rock inspired someone else to shape a bigger wheel, and talk shit. So the first guy gets pissed and makes one with a hole in it, and so on, and so on, until we find ourselves sitting at our computers doing exactly what's gotten us here from day one. It's really just the story of human experience, so I say enjoy it for what it is.
