This is just a short list of artistic contemporaries that I believe benefited in most ways from their divisions. Each had their own camp of followers, and though many may have died as a result, I believe that it's within these feuds that music was able to evolve. Would Mozart have written his requiem if he hadn't been poisoned, and rushed by Saleri? Would Beethoven have been as great, and rebelious, without Haydns over controlling mentoring? These are the things that push emotion and innovation IMO. It's not as if this phenomenom is exclusive to dubstep either. I'm sure that the man who shaped the first wheel out of rock inspired someone else to shape a bigger wheel, and talk shit. So the first guy gets pissed and makes one with a hole in it, and so on, and so on, until we find ourselves sitting at our computers doing exactly what's gotten us here from day one. It's really just the story of human experience, so I say enjoy it for what it is.
nice sig.

True. Techno and house have more in common than dubstep and brostep. Why these two very different sounds/mentalities must be considered as the same is completely beyond me.

I still don't get this term "brostep", I'm clearly still to new to it, but I probably like it considering I like pretty much all dubstep. hahaha

I hear this a lot on here, I don't think it's true. I think on any forum dedicated to a certain strain of music you'll have people claiming this, because they know a ton about that particular genre.

Dubstep is fairly new as a genre. If Metal was a new thing and there wasn't officially death metal, black metal, hair metal etc. etc. yet you could go say it's really diverse. You could do it with anything.

Seriously? Hard pressed? You're not looking hard enough. Uh... let's start with punk rock (the real deal from back inna day, not the shit that plays punk dress-up these days) - the fact that bands like Bad Brains, Flipper, X, Big Black, and many others all co-existed under the banner of 'Punk' yet had just about nothing in common sonically, ideologically, etc. with each other (or anybody else really) was nothing short of amazing: from the post-punk diaspora we get even more incredibly disparate tendencies in sound - from Cabaret Voltaire to Neurosis to Violent Femmes - all of these bands might as well have come from different planets, and yet they were all produced by the same "movements" when they occurred in the 70's and 80's.

So you say, "yeah, but that's all that old wack rock-type shit grandpa!" - well, let's talk about Hip Hop: how many fuckin' subgenres has that tired old beast crunked out and it's still dominant on the charts? Or for that matter jazz - good lord, there's a lot of different kinds of jazz and people who like this style or that to the exclusion of many others...

...My point being that this dialectic in the culture of music is omnipresent. Because the thing is, I too like dubstep from both sides of the proverbial fence - if it's done well, with imagination and originality. Gimme some tearout with horror samples, then some deep atmo that makes me feel like I'm floating in basspace, then some funky weird abstract shit that can't fit in either of those categories - it's all good.

No, the real problem here (if it's really even a problem more than just a fact of life) is how people use music.
Many people (especially teenagers and early 20-somethings) use it to define themselves and how they want to be seen. Why do teenage boys gravitate towards extreme and hard imagery, like metal tee shirts and skulls and all that? Because they want to be taken seriously as a badass by the public at large, plus they're all pumped up on newfound testosterone. Why do teen girls tend to like sappy polished singer-songwriter chicks who put forth the appearance of being independent, strong women? Because... (you figure it out this time.)

The interesting thing about this is that you can tell what someone lacks by how they overcompensate and strive to be seen: teen boys wanna be taken seriously because nobody takes them seriously already: in the same vein, suburban white kids listen to the noisiest, most aggressive stuff usually (think Slayer, Rammstein, etc.) while inner city black youth often embrace "smooth" sounds like R&B that provide a tranquility that might not be present much where they live.

This is all a big generalization too - I can hear the teen boys yelling "BUT IMA BADMAN! FUK U, YA DUN KNO!" - but I guess what I'm really saying is: it's not the music's fault. It's the people that listen to the music and then appropriate towards their own ends, such as creating an identity with it.

while identify with a lot of what is being said, this thread is validating the division

just play what you like and try not to get wrapped up in the trends or whos popular and what sells

after all...

it's just music

Hi Guys,

My first post on the forum is as follows.

Sure there is a divide between the genre of which we all love, you have the deep durty rolling basses and the mid range ear piercing stuff. Each to his own I say, if you don't like a track, deal with it, don't hate on the person who made it or is playing it out. If I hear a track that I'm not too fond of when I'm out and about I still have a cheeky skank to it, I'm on that dancefloor from event start to event finish because its all about showing support for the scene. Stop bitching and show more appreciation. Especially if your a producer, you can learn so much from every corner of the genre, you don't need to like the track its on but listen to the producers traits and see what working for them, because chances are the reason their finished piece is getting played out and not yours is because their production is tight and their sound a blend of uniqueness.

Peace

Monty

You and therapist are both totally correct. But I was drunk and it sounded good at the time. However, most everything else does have a tendency to get broken down into subgenres which Dubstep has thus far avoided. Which I think was my point. I don't really care so much at this point, the passion's gone since I've dried out.

P.S. I am a badman. Fuck you, you don't know. 8)

Amadeus is a screenplay not a historical documentary.
