hmmm there's allot to choose from and you might need to be a bit more specific.

Why do you want hardware?
Whats your budget?
Do you want a Drum machine (i.e. one that can be used to synthesize drum sounds) or a drum sequencer/ beatbox that you can load samples on to and sequence a beat from there?

Also there's a few hardware software hybrids that you might want to check out like Native Instruments Maschine.

And there's some really good software options as well, I'd definitely recommend Guru by FXpansion.

Well i know i could use software which i will too but i just like the physical aspect. And i wanna stay under $400
Im not sure with which one would be better for me to buy at first, i wanna be able to make as much of a dubstep beat if not all of it with whatever i buy.

Either one would allow you to make a variety of different 'style' beats including dubstep. For under $400 your probably not going to be able to get a great drum machine although I could well be wrong. I know that a Vermona will set you back at about £450, a Machine drum at over £1000 but obviously there are allot more, maybe check out some of the Jomox stuff but not too sure about prices on those though.

I'd recomend going for the Maschine or something similar. then you get the hands on feel but with all the benefits of software. Also if it is mainly dubstep your wanting it for then perhaps real drum samples would be more appropriate than purely synthesized sounds, which the maschine would allow you to use. Obviously this is completely a matter or taste. I also think that the maschine comes shipped with a large bank of 'Urban' drum hits that you may find useful if your starting out.

Hope this helps a bit

Yeah or old grooveboxes from Yamaha or Roland which sell for that price all day long. Korg has some as well, the newer Electribes are pretty good. I would say their sampler is the best one, the ESX1. With their synth and drum machine electribes you are pretty limited, but you can load your own samples into the ESX1 so it won't become outdated.

$400 isn't much when it comes to hardware, the stuff is expensive. You can find standalone and rackmount drum or synth modules for around that price but lacking in features and possibly no MIDI interface depending on what you choose. Look on ebay for drum or synth modules and then google them for reviews/sound examples. Jomox is pretty expensive, an Xbase-09 is about half the price of an actual TR-909, but that's still near a grand in most cases. They do make some simpler hardware like the mBase which go for around 400, but all it does is synthesize bass drums. It does an amazing job, but not a good choice for your only piece of kit IMO, more of an add-on.

You can pick up used VA synths for that price like a Virus A desktop which are great, you can synthesize drums on them, but it's a bit limited when it comes to percussion sounds and hats+snares tend to sound alike because you have to make use of the noise generator in order to create them.

Have you any hard synth/drum experience already?
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
