Stereo tricks

Saw some videos last night that opened my eyes a lot to the stereo field - something I've never bothered with much outside of panning hats a bit, and using auto-pan and ping pong delay in Ableton. I've only been producing for a couple months, so bare with me - I realize this is all common practice for most of you. Hopefully it may help out others who are struggling to get a better sound.




Something to be careful of when using stereo tricks (again, I'm looking at you, beginners) are phase problems. How often do you guys use techniques like the ones above and how do you go about addressing phase issues? It's good to constantly check your song in Mono and if it's sounding good there, then it's my understanding that one is on the right path. Even still, I'm curious as a beginner and looking to learn as much as possible about using the stereo field to improve one's sound.
