NI Massive loosing synth settings on update

Post by subfreq » Wed Sep 29, 2010 7:21 pm

I encountered this huge problem with Native Instruments Massive. It seems to be flying under the radar for some time. Here is what happened ...
I've had Massive installed on my computer for some time. I decided I would purchase the Komplete 7 bundle. I come back to my current project to find all of my instances of Massive in the default settings. Basically, I lost 2 months of work on this tune. These sounds were all custom and not based off of any presets.
With the information that I know. A user must go through all of their songs that use massive and save out a preset before doing any updates to the software! If someone else has a solution I'd like to hear it.

couldn't you just reload your custom presets?

No because they weren't all saved. That would be ridiculous to have to save out a preset each time you make a change to a bass sound.

but ya have to save them... cause they dont save themselves! ya close ya DAW... & next time ya open it there aint guna be anything there... just the default sound.
if you make a change to a preset.... its guna just go back to the preset ya last used, ya know??

ya get used to making your own patches & then saving every dif change ya make.

I rarely save any of my bass sounds besides the Base Templates that i made which are just start points of good tones.
Ableton saves every little change i made when i close the fucker, even if my laptop dies, in the undo history my custom massive shit will still be waiting for me when i get home from work

You should not have to save your settings. Not sure what application you are using. Every effect has the option to save it to use it in another project ... this is not meant to save it so it wont be lost. I HAVE NEVER SAVED PRESETS and had them reset themselves. You seem to be missing the issue.
The issue is with the updates.

There is no DAW that I know of that you have to save your settings before closing. Not one!

guess I was overlooking that... i always save cause alot of the time I will use them in different tracks.
also I fuck around abit with sound design & have bin building my own sound bank.

yeah I fukt up, when I had the cracked version... if ya had to reinstall.. ya sound would be reset.
guess this is what you have come across... well same kind of thing anyway.

This happened to me once as well. I think I killed any chance of fixing it when I accidently saved the default presets version but if you didn't do that there might be a chance to get it back.
Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the previous version to see if you get your custom presets back ?
If this doesn't work ask on NI's forum, maybe a NI tech guy can help fixing it and it's something that needs to be reported anyway.

@ Recessive Trait : happened to me updating my legit copy.

HOW DO YOU SURVIVE ON 1.0.4?!
I would starve on a diet with that little modulation...

I literally save upto 10 variations of a bass etc in massive. I have my own synth banks folder full of custom shit.

Dont want to have to say this, but i think people are just being plain stupid in not saving their own patches. that way you can go back and use them again in other songs, and you will never loose them if you re-install massive or update it.

PS: have you tried un-installing massive and re-installing the older version? It might save you big time.

Native-Instruments pointed me to a reinstaller that fixed the issue. By the way. You never have to save patches in DAWs. Lets get that clear. The only reason you would do this is to use the sound in another track. You can delete the plugin and reinstall it and your settings will stay in that tune. The idea of saving is for cross use only. Saving a preset is a great way to have a starting ground for a specific sound you might be creating. Anyways, problem solved. It was an issue on NI side. Just installing there patch fixed it.

Trash massive preferences, it worked for me.

mac hard drive/
library/
preferences/
com.native-instruments.Massive 4.plist

trash that file.
I'm not sure if it'll bring back old presets but it will stop Massive losing them.

Hope this helps.
