how much of a difference to expect?
so im a couple weeks away from having saved enough money to buy a decent pair of monitors......right now i'm doing my head in trying to decide between the Yamaha HS80m, the Dynaudio BM5a, and the Adam A7. Unfortunately I'm gonna have to drive about 4-5 hours to the nearest audio shop to check them out - but it's otherwise very exciting times as I've been producing fairly consistently now for 2 years now and absolutely tired of having shit speakers and headphones (not even good hi fi) to produce on.
anyways, was just curious to see how it was for you guys when you made the transition to a decent pair of monitors? i'm leaning towards the Yamaha Hs80 just cos they're fairly cheaper than both the Dynaudios and Adam A7, and i could use some of that leftover change to make a step towards treating my room. i'm also curious for anyone that does own either the Yamaha/Dynaudio i listed above, how do you find the rear port location and needing to set your speakers 2 feet away from the wall?
i'd imagine the Dynaudio/Adams are probably a bit better than the Yamaha's, but i've heard great reviews about the Yam HS80m' bass being very decent for dubstep. I'm curious if this is due to coloring in the low end, or if they're just built decently and have a lower frequency response and bigger speaker.
would love to hear from anyone that's used these speakers first hand. did anyone's production sky rocket right after you transitioned to monitors?
can't wait

Re: how much of a difference to expect?
It's more what you're used to than anything else. Not sure what you're producing on now or how it sounds, but all of my early tunes were produced on two different sets of hi-fi speakers depending on where I was living (and a $15 pair of Stanton DJ headphones, RIP) , and at one point I had a mastering engineer compliment me on how little work he had to do to when mastering it for vinyl. Before I moved, I bought KRK RP5s, which are technically much better than what I had before, but 3 years on and I'm still not 100% used to them, and I think my mixdowns aren't as good either. Part of it is that I don't produce as much as I did back then, and I'm not at home listening to music as much as I used to, but the lesson is, it will be different, but it's more about getting used to them and knowing how things SHOULD sound on them so that they translate well to a PA / CD / radio / whatever medium you're aiming for.
Re: how much of a difference to expect?
Can't comment on the specific monitors you've mentioned there but the first day I plugged in mine and loaded up my DAW it was like 'Oooooooh, I get it now'. My mixdowns have definitely been 150* better since then. To be fair I had only been producing 10 months or so when I got them and now I'm at a year and ten months so my mixdowns were bound to be better now but I think the results were immediately better even back then when I didn't really know what I was doing
Re: how much of a difference to expect?
my friend was a pretty good producer (musically) and when he got his monitors (KRK RP5's) his sound became more robust and sonically on point
it was the icing on his musical cake
so yes.. sometimes the monitors can make a world of a difference

I've listened to all 3 of these and work in a shop that sells 2 of them (adams, yamaha's) on a regular basis. Of course my word's are no substitution for trying them yourself but here is what I think of those 3.yummy wrote:so im a couple weeks away from having saved enough money to buy a decent pair of monitors......right now i'm doing my head in trying to decide between the Yamaha HS80m, the Dynaudio BM5a, and the Adam A7. HS80 - As you said great bass response, think the trade off here compared to others is they aren't as detailed. Not too harsh so not going to fatigue you too greatly.
Adam's - Very interesting sounding for me, heard them for the first time the other day. Reminds me of the NS10's, not a great deal of bass but doesn't exaggerate the tops or the low's. Best part for me is the transient response, never heard that kind of response before, really precise. Again bass response isn't great, they were designed to be paired with a sub so if you go for these I would advise you get one!
Dynaudio's - In this scenario I would say it's the all rounder of the three, better bass response than the adam's but it isn't hyped.
Personally I would go for the HS80's and treat your room man, seems the best way forward

Re: how much of a difference to expect?
I think spending money to treat your room + monitors is a good look.
Also, just want to add that for monitors it's most important to get an accurate impression of your music (you can't mix what you can't hear), then #2 it's important to be familiar with your monitors, and then bass response pretty far down the list.

i have a hs80m pair and LOVE them. sound can be a bit midrange happy, but that is good... u can really tell when sounds are fighting in that range. the bass is nice too. also, they are not fatiguing to my ears. i RECOMMEND.
