I really didn't want to add ANOTHER how-to-make this sound thread to the list... but I've looked, and tried, and experimented...even bumped old threads referring these tracks... yet I still haven't gotten the sound I want, or anybody that has shared their attempts at making this lead.
Basically there is two leads, one is in Emalkay's "when I look at you" and the other is in Pendulum's "set me on fire"... There is a sort of hollow sounding epic lead that is in both of these tracks at a certain point. If you listen to the tracks you will immediately know what I'm talking about because they sound very similar.
So far I've tried combinations of PW, square, saw, and triangle waves, usually through a LP to smooth the timbre a little... Then I tried detuning, and chorus, phaser, reverb, distortion, tube, and anything else I think MIGHT work. The closest I've gotten so far is a Pulse and a saw one octave apart, very small detune or spread, portamento, LP filter w/ medium cutff, w/ reverb and saturation then sometimes layering multiple synths. It has that general sound, but lacks the hollowness and epicness of the leads in those two tracks.
Any ideas would be great, I feel like I'm just trying whatever at this point. I try to keep my sound design systematic, but it's getting to the point where I feel like I'm just doing everything random and just hoping the right sound comes out.
Making lead from Emalkay/Pendulum tracks
