As far as debut release’s go, fledgling Brisbane label Ender and Elroy 4.0 have set a high precedent for their future catalogue if this four track first serving is anything to go by.
Local Brisbane beat maker Ross Bird aka Elroy 4.0 has been honing his production skills since the age of 15, now 23, this self taught producer is no fly-by-night success, and the sonic mastery and brooding, futuristic vibes of this release are proof that this is a man on the creative cusp of some next level shit.
Inspired in his mid teens upon hearing the sounds of Hip Hop producers such as Cut Chemist and Nu-mark from J5 and Dj Katch and Dave Dog from the Resin Dogs, Elroy started playing around with basic beat programs on his computer. He was soon to get his first taste of club culture, which moved him onto Djing, and experimenting in his production with more 4/4 oriented sounds, which found him getting gigs in local clubs. Yet he still felt restrained by the confines of the dance floor and un-inspired at what he was hearing and playing in clubs where the audience was after the more instant and obvious rather than the subtle and deep. It wasn’t until his elder brother returned from a trip to the UK in 2006 and played him the Dubstep tune ‘Mecca’ by Emalkay that his whole approach to production and music was altered. He quit djing permanently and decided to focus all of his energy into crafting unique pieces of bass music, and this EP is the result.
Like an alien energy manifesting its form through sound, Laser Storm comes breathing through a rip in the fabric of time with deeply sinister synth work and pulsing surges of sub-bass moving through space like a dense, strobing fog in slow motion, setting the tone for the enveloping sonic’s that are about to bear down upon the listener with infinite weight. As a debut, Laser Storm will serve as a talisman to the future trajectory of this young producer who, with this release being the first of many, is merely scratching the surface of his seemingly infinite talent.
Boss Master Battle flips the script on the initial cut, launching straight into business with the omnipresent vibe that shit is about to get real serious, real soon…Before you’ve even had time to digest the bass line, splintered jungle breaks come searing through the digital dread before unleashing an all out drum assault, pushing the forward momentum of this tune into redline overdrive as the Boss Master has our hero Elroy by the jugular and is going for the kill! Pure dance floor fire on this cut!!
The remixes of Boss Master battle from Ender signings Puzahki (Brisbane) and Epoch (Christchurch) serve up completely different vibes and tempo’s to the original, and the results hint at the sheer quality of the artist roster that this label already has incubating in its release schedule.
Puzahki wholly deconstructs the piece and bakes up a highly narcotic, disjointed, de tuned, bugged out Hip Hop beat that’s heavy on the digital and drowning in cough syrup. Utter illness.
Epoch takes the narrative of Boss Master to the next level, propelling the battle through a frantic 135 bpm break beat video game arcade rave off that switches between Tiger Style, Eagle Claw and Cobra Stance in vivid sonic movements towards the ultimate final show down!
