---------------------------------- SCRATCH PERVERTS -----------------------------------------
The Scratch Perverts are a collective of turntablist DJs from the UK, formed in 1996 by Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and DJ Plus One. The Scratch Perverts originally consisted of 4 members; Tony Vegas, Renegade, First Rate and Mr. Thing. Having made names for themselves both individually and as a team, The Scratch Perverts soon expanded to a 8-member crew with the addition of Prime Cuts, Harry Love, Killa Kela and DJ Plus One. The collective split for a short period in 2000, then reformed with just 3 members; Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and DJ Plus One. The other members did not reform due to artistic differences, and have gone on to pursue individual projects.
The Scratch Perverts are generally acknowledged as some of the finest and most influentual turntablists ever. They have contributed countless techniques and pioneered radical innovations in developing the skills and possiblities that can be achieved on a turntable. As a team, they have won two consecutive World DMC Team titles; Prime Cuts also won two consecutive World ITF titles, and Plus One won the World DMC Champion and World Vestax Champion titles. Having become so dominant, they have now retired indefinitely from competition.
Now after winning all there is to offer on the competition circuit they have now began to produce their own music. Their take on hip-hop is going to be used in the broadest sense. Describing hip-hop as being a celebration of all kinds of music just by its very nature the Scratch Perverts forthcoming releases will not be of a typical hip-hop style. They have gained influences from past masters Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa to present day acts such as Dillinja, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Aphex Twin.
The Scratch Perverts are also notable within the field of turntablism for their adoption of the drum and bass music of their native UK, which now features heavily in their DJ sets. As recording artists, they have also collaborated with drum and bass producers Ed Rush and Optical (artist) to produce the track ‘Get Ill’.
Although they have retired from battling, they still continue to DJ; holding a residency at Fabric in London, and regularly playing festivals and club nights around the world.
They previewed two tracks off their forthcomming album through a 2 track limited edition vinyl only single.
------------------------------KATY B ------------------------------
Undeniably the pioneer vocalist that pushed Funky to the forefront of the underground raver’s favourite genre. Born in Peckham, South East London, Some of her first audiences were school friends that were wowed by her musical abilities, vocal range and confidence. As she progressed her audiences changed and her collaboration with DJ NG on her hit track ‘Tell Me’ propelled Katy into the club scenes of London and the UK which eventually made the play list for commercial radio stations such as Kiss 100. However, ‘Tell Me’ was not her first hit and will not be her last. Collaborations with DJ Zinc, Geeneus, Ms Dynamite and Benga, also pioneers of the UK underground scene on Rinse FM, are sure to make her debut album a piece that will combine the artists soulful vocals, captivating lyrics and prowess with, most importantly for Katy,- Bass. Influences include Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and Musiq to name but a few which is conveyed through her ability to capture an audience through her song-writing abilities. ‘As I’, a collaboration with DJ Geeneus being one of them and is often described as ‘one for the girls’.
So what’s in store for Katy’s future? ‘I just want to make good music and write songs’ Katy says. But as a Brit School graduate, who knows? With her album set to drop later this year, there’s no telling how far she could go…
-------------------------------- EMALKAY -------------------------------------------
With initial support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay gained the attention of South London based label Boka Records with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released in October 2006 followed by Monsters in June 2007.
The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 2007, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 2008.
In the fall of 2008, Emalkay produced Explicit - a tune that gradually captured the interest of such prominent dubsteppers as Benga and received major support from acts such as The Scratch Perverts and drum and bass duo Chase and Status. After being approached by Caspa however, the track was finally released on the Dub Police label in February 2009 after much anticipation.
