90's and early 2000's b4 DNB got fukt were a golden time for music the drugs were a lot better than these days too (although not as good as the late 80's from what ive heard) I remember the days when a crap pill was mixed with ket now kids actually willfully do that shit never mind plant food etc

Mabeye that's why a lot of music has lost its soul these days - crap drugs?

Goldie and Rob Playford were off their tits on MDMA writing Timeless, sure thats part of the reason its such a blinding album can hear it in the music
I'm sure drugs played a part, but it wasn't the be all end all of the music imo...

You've got cat's nowadays like Fanu...made the amazing album "daylightless" and the only drug he does is coffee...I'm sure there were producers like that back in the day too. :)

speaking of which he's back to working on some new beats according to his fb

what i still wanna know back to the goldie/playford era of timeless is that classic snake filter effect playford got out of the old akai that he used so well on that lp

good read about production of the lp here too http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun98/a ... oldie.html

Timeless is a good start, the double cd is hectic. Other albums you can get on cd from the 90s era of dnb that are, for me, essentials...

Photek - Modus Operandi
Boymerang - Balance Of The Force
Source Direct - Exercise The Demons
4hero - 2 Pages
Omni Trio - Skeleton Keys
Grooverider - Mysteries Of Funk
Big Bud - Infinity + Infinity

..theyre like Timeless, not really for green ears, but theyre the albums that are still getting better 13 years later when all the club plates are long forgotten.
Those are good albums

Another three that are worth checking are

A Guy Called Gerald 'Black Secret Technology'
4 Hero 'Parallel Universe'
Dom & Roland 'Industry'

imo, a lot of the best stuff was just on single releases, so it's worth checking for some of the compilations released back in the day. here are some of my recommendations:

Artcore 1 & 2
Promised Land 1-4 (all great, more on the deeper tip, tho)
Logical Progression (the first one is a classic, wasn't such a fan of the later ones, though)
obviously, the first couple Platinum Breakz compos
Enforcers: Above The Law (on Reinforced)
Suspect Package (HardLeaders)
Torque (No U-Turn)
Tech Steppin' (Emotif)

there's more, but that should give you a decent start!

My next mix project is actually going to be an old skool techstep mix, which will have a lot of that kind of stuff on it. It will be on my site in a few weeks, but, having said that, a few years back I did two short tributes to classic dnb labels which might be of interest to those of you who want to learn more about those times:

Pearsall presents Renegades (my Renegade Hardware tribute)

01. Usual Suspects – Doorway (Renegade Hardware)
02. Usual Suspects – Spawn (Renegade Hardware)
03. Dylan – The Eye’s (Renegade Hardware)
04. Monochrome & Subphonics – Capacity (Renegade Hardware)
05. Genotype – Toxic (Renegade Hardware)
06. Future Forces Inc – Strontium Jazz (Dillinja Remix) (Renegade Hardware)
07. Future Forces Inc – Point of Origin (Renegade Hardware)
08. Usual Suspects – Killa Bees (Renegade Hardware)
09. Dom & Roland – Trauma (Renegade Hardware)
10. Future Forces Inc – Cold Fusion (Renegade Hardware)

Pearsall presents Mean Machine (my Metalheadz tribute)

01. Codename John – The Warning (Metalheadz)
02. Ed Rush – Skylab (Metalheadz)
03. J Majik – Repertoire (Metalheadz)
04. Peshay – On The Nile (Metalheadz)
05. Doc Scott – Drumz ’95 (Nasty Habits Remix) (Metalheadz)
06. J Majik – Arabian Nights (Metalheadz)
07. Adam F – Metropolis (Metalheadz)
08. Rufige Kru – Dark Metal (Metalheadz)
09. Dillinja – Deadly Deep Subs Remix (Razor’s Edge)
10. Asylum – Da Base II Dark (Metalheadz)
11. Goldie – Kemistry (Grooverider VIP Mix) (Razor’s Edge)
12. Dillinja – Jah Know Ya Big (Metalheadz)
13. J Majik – Your Sound (Metalheadz)
11. Genotype – Extra Terrestrial (Renegade Hardware)

gonna get murdered for this (actually probably not here on DSF, but on any dnbforum, yes) but i've never felt the source direct lp.
their 12"s are blatantly some of the best jungle ever made, no question. but i just dont like most of whats on the album. cant put my finger on it either, might be that break that appears loads throughout, the samples, track progression, i dunno.

if i compare the LP stuff to tracks like snake style and exit 9 (BOTH ON THE SAME RECORD! name a better 12".. you cant), almost sounds like a diff duo altogether.

The Jungle Tekno series on Jumpin' & Pumpin' and the Hard Leaders series on Kickin' are good for early stuff from 1992 to 1995 IMO.

I hear you. I love the album myself but its something different for sure. It was released in 1999 if memory serves, jungle was long gone by then and we were knee deep in tech step. I still love it though, mindweaver, technical warfare, wanton conduct etc, sick tunes, but definatly on the cold techstep tip, not one for the jungle purists.

I pretty much agree - Black Domina and stuff like that is cool, but it's not aged as well (imo, of course) as some of the earlier stuff like 'Exit 9' or 'The Crane' or 'Secret Liaisons' (JESUS WHAT A TUNE THAT IS). then again, if you really like that cold clipped sound, then their album is a great place to look

Bigup T-Power aka Mr Sofalumpkins the legend! Spent unhealthy amounts of time chatting to him on AIM he's a real sound guy one of the most talented and versatile producers ever with so many releases I lost count a long time ago. Aside from the DNB done some great jungle as well, really feeling the new direction he's going in (and the new look!) with the filthy electro stuff big time as well and his dabbles in dubstep have been pretty impressive too.

There is no holding back a producer of this calibre!
