You're Appointing Who? Please Obama, Say It's Not So!!

Here are the first few paragraphs of the article, interesting read to say the least
"The person who may be responsible for more food-related illness and death than anyone in history has just been made the US food safety czar. This is no joke.
Here's the back story.
When FDA scientists were asked to weigh in on what was to become the most radical and potentially dangerous change in our food supply -- the introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods -- secret documents now reveal that the experts were very concerned. Memo after memo described toxins, new diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and hard-to-detect allergens. They were adamant that the technology carried "serious health hazards," and required careful, long-term research, including human studies, before any genetically modified organisms (GMOs) could be safely released into the food supply.
But the biotech industry had rigged the game so that neither science nor scientists would stand in their way. They had placed their own man in charge of FDA policy and he wasn't going to be swayed by feeble arguments related to food safety. No, he was going to do what corporations had done for decades to get past these types of pesky concerns. He was going to lie."

Genes from GM food can actually be transferred into cells of organisms from ingestion and start replicating with a new code. I think the world is more likely to die from adverse effects of GM food, direct and indirect, than any other way (war, disease etc).nowaysj wrote:America is filled with many genetically modified humans.
Once GM plants get out and crossbreed with non-GM species members then we're fucked, especially if they carry a recessive gene for sterilisation which would be extremely hard to weed out. Better just to fuck the whole thing off now before it's too late.

We've been genetically modifying crops and animals for millennia through selective breeding. Your average beef cow is hugely genetically altered compared to its "naturally" evolved forerunner (now largely extinct)... doesn't seem to have hurt anything. Same goes for chickens, pigs, wheat, corn and pretty much everything else we farm or breed.
Genes change over time... it's vital to check things as we go to be safe, but it really isn't anything new.

this. think its wrong? go get a degree in a biological science and prove it. If we don't go GM millions of people are going to starve sooner or later.magma wrote:We've been genetically modifying crops and animals for millennia through selective breeding. I seriously hope that was meant in sarcasm. It's not even that simple to splice genes into existing GM crops. If you weren't joking and believe what you say is true, we'd be fucking vegetable/cow/dust mite/cold virus/salmonella hybrids by now. Genes in GM food is the same as genes in normal food, they just haven't always existed in the ancestral cell line of that food organism.test recordings wrote:Genes from GM food can actually be transferred into cells of organisms from ingestion and start replicating with a new code. Now, on the other hand, non-native genes (eg adding genes from an animal to a plant) could have side effects that no one has predicted. These could cause serious problems.

gm or no gm, nobody thinks there is a bit of incompatibility between the dude and the position, and, by ignoring this, obama proves again he's a slave to the $$ ?

likely quid pro quo there.

At magma, come on bro, absolutely we've altered the genetics of our food sources, but surely there is a significant difference between doing it over four thousand years versus seven months?
