Re: RBMA - Soundclash 2
Thursday October 14 2010 marked the second Red Bull Culture Clash and there was controversy, drama and amazing music in equal amounts.
In February Metalheadz narrowly beat the sound systems of Trojan, DMZ and Soul II Soul at the first ever Red Bull Culture Clash. Back to defend their crown, Goldie's team were now up against Channel One, Magnetic Man's Skream & Benga and Soul Jazz.
Just like last time the four camps each had a stage of their own at 45 degrees from each other, allowing the audience always be close to the action. One round was a warm up, another judged entertainment, while another allowed the system to play music of any genre and each sound system had 15 minutes per round to convince the audience of their worthiness before they were judged.
Metalheadz went all out using the combined talents of Andy C, Goldie and Shy FX in an effort to retain their crown. However, the most controversial member of their team was GQ, who asked the Soul Jazz MC how he could (with no disrespect) "Turn up to a sound clash in check shorts and red socks". The hand bags were out again when he simply said to Skream and Benga MCs: "I've been MCing for 23 years... who are you?"
Andy C got the crowd going in the way only he is able to, playing snippets of his usual set but the moment of the night came when Shy FX turned the form book upside down and played Katy B and Benga's Katy On A Mission. However there was a twist, and the lyrics were changed to hilarious effect. "Your career I swear might end too soon", was my favourite line.
However, the dubstep dream team hit back, playing the samba, in reference to Goldie's recent appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, while one of their MCs claimed they had Anne Widdecombe backstage. Furthermore, when Skream and Benga played I Need Air to an exuberant crowd, a monster hit of their alias Magnetic Man, the Headz looked worried.
The Soul Jazz camp played a variety of music with their MC stating they were playing for the audience and not themselves. However, they were the target of much abuse from GQ who said from the first round that the the fight was between Channel One, Skream & Benga and Metalheadz. When talking about Soul Jazz he simply said "you done already".
Channel One on the other hand, pulled no punches and instead let the music do the talking. Mikey Dread, who said he doesn't use headphones as he knows exactly what he's playing, used his talents to wow the crowd. Playing classic reggae and dancehall hits, they gained support of the majority of the crowd. In addition, they had mutual support from the other camps with each saying if it wasn't for reggae, their genre wouldn't exist. There was a sense that throughout the night that Channel One represented the primordial beginnings of the other genres, with Mikey Dread saying "We were here 20 years ago, and we will be here in 20 years..."
At the end of the night, it was Mikey Dread's Channel One that took victory, with Metalheadz, Skream & Benga and Soul Jazz having to leave empty handed. However, corny as it is, the real winners were anyone who got to witness such a mix of sounds that night.

There is no point whatsoever putting Rodigan on there and expecting anyone else to have even a sniff of winning.ashley wrote:If there is another sound clash....

Re: RBMA - Soundclash 2
if there is a 3rd one, whoever is repping "dubstep" needs to put goth-trad on their team
Re: RBMA - Soundclash 2
They should give one to Tectonic. Pinch, Distance, Cyrus, Jack Sparrow and RSD would smash it.
Or Tempa and just have Youngsta with Toast, Joker D (LX One) and SP.

Re: RBMA - Soundclash 2
yeah swamp81 is huge, best label at the moment for me, but not really a soundclash thing... don't think moritz von oswald's health let's him clash, nonetheless would be interesting at least... if not hyperdub then tectonic would be my bet too... or dmz again...
channel one obviously as champions...metalheadz for another chance at the crown ? or maybe Valve sounsystem... : D that would be nice... as for the 4th sounsystem, if they want to do it as in the last two and have two dub/reggae systems... there's just too much to choose from... rodigan, addies, jah shaka, iration steppas... etc..

We are currently working on a similar project here in the states. There are so many crews here now that perhaps it's time to get a little clash action going. I was born and raised on it so anyone think they can step, BRANG IT!

Valve would kill anyone in terms of sound, theyd need to pick the right reps though, Dilinja and Lemon D wouldn't cut the mustard on there own imo.ohoi wrote:yeah swamp81 is huge, best label at the moment for me, but not really a soundclash thing... don't think moritz von oswald's health let's him clash, nonetheless would be interesting at least... if not hyperdub then tectonic would be my bet too... or dmz again...

The Valve system is nowhere near as good as it used to be. Compared to modern systems anywaywooda916 wrote:Valve would kill anyone in terms of sound, theyd need to pick the right reps though, Dilinja and Lemon D wouldn't cut the mustard on there own imo.ohoi wrote:yeah swamp81 is huge, best label at the moment for me, but not really a soundclash thing... don't think moritz von oswald's health let's him clash, nonetheless would be interesting at least... if not hyperdub then tectonic would be my bet too... or dmz again...

Re: RBMA - Soundclash 2
All valve is is some badboy homemade bass bins, (most of) the mids and tops are Funktion One, id say its still as good or better than most soundsystems out there.pikeymobile wrote:The Valve system is nowhere near as good as it used to be. this would be pure jokes putting rodigan against anyone, he would slew 3 soundsystems in just 1 round...arktrix wrote:There is no point whatsoever putting Rodigan on there and expecting anyone else to have even a sniff of winning.ashley wrote:If there is another sound clash....
