Heres the 2 rules of dubstep.


1)Sub Bass

2)135-145 bpm


Anything you do within those very small restrictions is completely up to you.

I suggest you research the genre a bit more.

Almost, rule 3, half time drums. Not necessarily for the whole track but the general vibe must be halftime. Otherwise your either making breakbeat, garage or jungle.

yeah i'd say ignore that rule and do whatever you want...and if whatever you want happens to include half-time then so be it. and yes a new tune probably pops up on an hourly basis with that pattern but that aint no fuckin rule at all, seriously...not even close to "almost".

It's not a rule to music but it clearly is to dubstep :s I don't care how people make their tunes or what they put in them but a genre is defined chiefly by it's tempo and the drums. If I played you a drum&bass song or a techno one you wouldn't go "ah yeah that's dubstep man" even if the synths and melodies were all very dubstep inspired. Why? Because whether you realise it or not you identify genres (well in EDM anyway) by the drums.

A lot of different genres share the tempo 140 so you can't just claim anything at that speed is dubstep because what about all the house, garage, grime, jungle, breakbeat, UKfunky, Electro etc that's been made at that speed? That's not dubstep is it.

People on this board always get so upset at the mention of any 'rules' or 'boundaries' within genres. Of course you don't have to pidgeonhole yourself or fit into any of these rules to make music. Nobody is saying that you do, but they are there and without them being there there wouldn't be any such thing as genre at all. If I made a breakcore tune and said, "no it's dubstep, I made it so I get to say it's dubstep" everyone would be like "errrr, that's not dubstep man" but these same people will jump at the chance to look like they are all liberal thinking and not pigeon holing anyone by replying to these threads saying "it's all dubstep maaaaaan, just do whatever you want and call it dubstep maaaaan"



EDIT: Like the tune in my sig is at 138bpm, it has a dark atmosphere and an lfo wobble on the bassline. It certainly ain't dubstep though.

some friends and i put on a weekly trip hop / hip hop night throughout the summer at a local ganja friendly cafe. after the first night, one of the staff came up to thank us, adding, "i like that your dubstep wasn't as hard as a lot of other dubstep" when we had been rocking nothing but chilled, 90-105 kind of hip hop beats all night.

That's what you guys don't understand. Dubstep is more than just what it sounds like. It's aesthetics, it's a scene. For example a lot of D1s recent stuff sounds almost exactly like UK Funky but it's not. It's not always about what your ears tell you.

Dubstep is a culture, a scene...If you're making music around a certain tempo(135ish - 145ish) and with a decent amount of sub bass and showcasing it around the Dubstep community - theres no reason NOT to call it dubstep.


Its this reason alone is why dubstep is so diverse.. If you don't wanna have your snare on 3, thats totally up to you.

on the other hand...to look at it a lil different, if mans wanna believe that half-time is some sort of rule of dubstep, that's their business.

doesn't affect my perception of the sound whatsoever.
