Re: Food for thought.
I've talked to a number of producers recently who seem to think that they have to have some kind of barrier between thier dubstep and "other" output, by using multiple production names, or clearly de-lineating them or whatever. Fuck these boundaries, mix it all up and put whatever music you feel is most representative of yourself into the public domain, regardless of genre labels.
If you don't want to be known as only a dubstep producer, try self-releasing a digital EP of varied material and see what happens. It's a strange scene nowadays in that most people who have been into it for a while have divorced themselves from the direction it's mainstream sound has gone to (myself very much included), but still affiliate themselves with the dubstep identity through this forum or whatever. Not sure what point I'm making but that's my two penneth for now

Re: Food for thought.
OP I feel ya. I pretty much took all the dubstep off my ipod except for emalkay and fabriclive 37. I think that everything should be taken in moderation including dubstep. Yeah, it is a pain sometimes to produce but I find by taking breaks and doing other things help combat this boringness. I also think its good to go back to the roots of dub and reggae. Lots of good elements you can pick up from that genre. But like you said, producers should not be "stuck" producing in one genre. The sky is the limit.
Re: Food for thought.
Its not about producing a certain genre, I make loads of different music.. What I mean is - I will show the dubstep stuff to the public, cause I know however small it is, I have a fan base but for my house/hiphop/triphop stuff, theres no fanbase there and its a bit scary to make that leap into different genres, in terms of putting myself out there.

So what you're saying is you don't want to put out new music in different genre's because you feel people will judge you different? That's crazy man... I read or heard somewhere... if you make something and you like it than other people will like it.

well, like you said.. you are known for your dubstep. those other genres arent "happening" now like dubstep is.legend4ry wrote:Its not about producing a certain genre, I make loads of different music.. but pull a "superproducer" move and make an album where you flex all your styles, make a non-genre Legend4ry presentation and give your fans and listeners more to love.

Sometimes I start working on music of a certain genre because it feels like thats what im supposed to be working on
When inside I would rather be working on something completely different

considering i was pleasantly surprised by some boc covers and the stuff he's working on that he volunteered for minecraft i wouldn't call him a fraud and i'm not the biggest fan of his stuff

This is totally my situation. Generally this production board is very good, which is the main reason why I come here, but for instance in the general discussion page there isn't much for me to get excited about.cogidubnus wrote:It's a strange scene nowadays in that most people who have been into it for a while have divorced themselves from the direction it's mainstream sound has gone to (myself very much included), but still affiliate themselves with the dubstep identity through this forum or whatever
@ Legendary, it sounded like in the OP you were saying that not only were you worried about showing people your different style tracks, but that you were also disillusioned with dubstep these days. I think that was what people picked up on.

same way i feel about dnb
still make both genres but then again i don't drown myself in the genres i make
like when say a dj friends start going on about the latest dubplates, releases and such i'm generally clueless unless it's something i heard or read about in passing or came across it when i go shopping for tunes (haven't done that explicitly for dubstep or dnb in ages it feels)
Re: Food for thought.
I got bored the other day and ended up knocking out some 170bpm glitchy dnb style track, though am not sure it's really dnb.

legend4ry wrote:So ive been sitting here the last few days, listening to my body of work across multiple genres and bpm and I always seem to push my dubstep stuff.
So it made me think, do I only push my dubstep and make dubstep more than other genres because I have a some-what established name in this scene? In an ideal world, i'd be making music like Moloko or Massive Attack and earning a decent living out of it.. Yet I make music within a scene I don't even like anymore.
Anyone else feel like this?
EDIT: I say I don't like.. I mean, I don't have the same passion for it, as I did 3-4 years ago.
It happens, I understand where you are coming from. I used to make dnb, and listen to a lot of dnb, and I killed that music. Its dead to me. Once you know all the tunes and have seen every dj a million times it just gets dull. The good shit doesnt get dull, but the amount of bad shit just warps your ears. Aliens, awsome film when I was 10, seen the movie remade really badly 100 different times since, now when I watch it I just smell the cheese of 18 years suffering copycat versions of its scenes and dialog and its lost something as a result. Still quality, but its been soiled.
Theres then the question of art, if you are like me you are a purist, or at least we want to be. Art should come from the individual, an expresion of ones self. You only have your own ears to go by so if its not good for you then what the hell is the point in making it and how would one qualify music you have limited enjoyment of? Its the sort of thing that causes a lot of generic bullshit music. I believe that but I also believe there is something to be said for pleasing others with art, as much as the 2 opinions stand opposed in a sense.
I watched an itnerview with Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane where she said 'rock music is a commercial art form, we make no mistake there, were not sitting up in our rooms all night worrying about our artistic vision, we entertain people.' And thats the thing, by releasing music theres obviously a part of you that would like to share your art with others, if art can be seen as a form of communication surely on some level making art soley for ones own enjoyment is akin for a form of self conversing madness, or at least a mamoth jerkoff. So when you are sat there infront of a blank canvas with an option to make whatever you want, and you are the kind of guy with such a diverse appreciation of music that you could litterally start making any genre and find something of yourself in it, maybe the tendency to gravitate towards something 'you know will sell' isnt actually as crude and soulless as it may seem. It could be seen as logical and artisticly credable to embrace the listener somewhat and concentrate effort into areas which amount to more than masturbation.
The important thing is to always enjoy what you are making and to keep following inspiration when you have it, no matter where it takes you. You make a wide range of tracks so youre obviously doing that, I wouldnt beat yourself up about it and question it too much. Dont feel confined to dubstep, but also dont feel confiend by your own artistic ego/morality, whatever you want to call it. People are a lot more open to multiple genres than theyre given cred for I think, a 2 track plate is one thing, but albums, mixes, anything long playing, slip in the other stuff amoung the dubstep, use it as a platform to expand rather than a box to rot in. And dont feel bad about using it, if you are doing it to push boundires your doing everyone a favour, its the people using it to stay in their box and keep it locked that do the harm.
I dont listen to 95% of dubstep, I actively avoid it where ever possible. When you get to that saturation point the only thing to do is give it a break, you cant keep positive about a genre when youve overdosed on it. Ignorance is bliss. Thats maybe semi unrelated to the meandering nonsense I just posted above, Ive lost track tbh. Time for another J at any rate, Ive used up my quota of waffle for today.
