Buying New Headphones

I really dont have a recommendation because I use 20 Dollar Sony's. You really don't want them as an all in one solution anyway.

A brand you shouldn't overlook is Ultrasone. I want a pair for djing myself but not till the Sony's die or mysteriously get misplaced lol.

I'm complicating things too much, I'm sorry. How about recommendations for headphones/in ear for listening to dubstep and bass heavy genres. I'm thinking of getting beat tours because they look so goddam sexy.

I have said it before, and will say it again for a fair priced set of cans for production the AKG K240's are the way to go imo. In this market the Sennheiser HD280 are also worth a look. As Abz said, "studio cans like k240 are pretty boring to listen to but accurate and flat" this is very true, that's why I use my Sennheiser hd 215's for listening/DJing in the house. I also use a beaten up pair of sony's that seem like they will never die, for when on the move. Got to say im also with Deadly with the not liking the in-ear's, I have tried a few pairs, and I must say I was amazed with how they sounded, and the bass response was very good for such little drivers... But I think they are so much worst then cans for your hearing, so I will not use them, even ear-buds.

IMHO on your budget i would get;
AKG K240: £85 for production
Sennheiser hd 215: £30 for listening/DJing

OR

If you really only want one pair, you can get some Sennheiser HD-25(£150), they are the best one size fits all cans I have uesd (I have not tried the Grado's, or Ultrosone's, but have heard good things.

I have a friend that loves grados. He has 3 pair. I have only heard the cheaper ones and I was impressed. No one uses them for studio work but that's what they were designed for originally.

I am not a KRK fan. Don't have high expectations for them. You want to stick with the companies that have done this stuff for ages. My k240s are 30 years old. That should tell you something.

The main difference between listen headphones, and production headphones, is that the listen headphones "colour" the sound. This colouring is sometimes deliberate, or because they are produced cheaper. This colouring of the sound (Bass boost for example) makes the headphones sound more pleasing when listening. With production headphones colouring the sound is avoided as much as possible, they have a clean sound, with flat response, and a good dynamic. This is to help you hear what is going on in the sound, and not mask it under all the colouring. This is why I agree with what Abz said, about production headphones sounding boring some time. (I like listening to acoustic/jazz on my K240's, but thats about it)

As for spending more on production headphones, then listen ones? I would say, yes. You can pick up some pretty decent listen can's for cheap, but thats not true for production headphones.

If You are looking for some nice listening headphone, have a look at the Grado's/Ultrosone's. As i have said, I have let to try them, but they have some very good reviews.

only thing i've noticed is the earcup faux leather or whatever material is starting to crack a lil, but they come with a replacement set from the get go so even if they do go to shit no biggie

Wrong, they built it with the swivel

Sure incidentally makes the best in-ears in the game from what I gather but they are mad expensive. I never want to sink 600 bucks into something that could just accidentally fall out of my pocket and be lost forever.

Just for shits and giggles I'll post up this pic. Considered by some to be the holy grail of headphones and surprise surprise they are Sony's. Our of print now. I think they go for over 10 grand. Apparently the manual is bound in linen. I wouldn't think a company like Sony would even have the time for products liek this.

I tried telling my audiophile buddy that these headphone companies make their headphones sound shitty on purpose so they can charge as much as they do for the top of the line models. Seriously, give me a good reason why one model is 50 bucks and another is 500? It's the same fucking material! The manufacturing costs should be the same no? Explain this to me.

I have a pair of Shure SE530's for general iPod listening, maybe overkill but i've never heard better earphones in my life, and i've been through so many pairs i've lost count.

I'd go so far as to say they sound better on some songs than my A+H XD53 cans haha

I have no doubt they do. A&H isn't really known for cans... in fact I didn't know they made cans at all. Did you really pay 550$ or whatever for them? I just can't imagine parting ways with that much money for in-ears. I speant 270 on the AKG and believe that was splurging for me. That much for speakers, no prob.
